Chapter 56 - THE AMBER SYNTHESIS

Dante stood over the broken body of the geneticist, breathing heavily through his teeth, smoke curling from the barrel of his carbine. Around him, the lower chamber was utterly silent, littered with the corpses of the strike team.

Dante dropped his weapon, dropped to one knee, and ripped the titanium medical case from the dead scientist’s grasp. With a brutal twist of his combat knife, he broke the biometric locks, popping the lid open.

Inside, resting in cryogenic cradles of pressurized nitrogen, were three vials of luminescent amber fluid, surrounded by automated micro-centrifuge needles. Dante read the digital label glowing on the internal screen:

*CATALYST STABILIZER: PROJECT OMEGA. GENETIC REVERSAL FORMULA.*

"It's here," Dante muttered, his chest heaving with relief that almost brought him to his knees. "The Archivist didn't just come to harvest... he had the completed synthesis to preserve the tissue."

Dante bounded up the iron stairs three at a time, reaching the catwalk where Rosa lay collapsed against the brick wall. Her lips had turned a terrifying shade of dusky blue, and her eyelids fluttered weakly. Sophia was sitting beside her, holding her mother’s limp hand between both of her tiny palms, blowing gentle warmth onto Rosa's cold fingers.

"Daddy," Sophia whispered, looking up with large, solemn eyes that finally showed the faintest glimmer of fear. "Mommy is going to sleep. Tell her she isn't allowed to sleep yet."

"She won't sleep, Sophia," Dante said, dropping down beside them.

He loaded the amber vial into the pneumatic injector, dialed the dosage gauge with steady, surgical hands, and pressed the device against the side of Rosa’s neck. A sharp hiss echoed through the catwalk as the golden fluid surged into her carotid artery.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. Rosa's head lolled backward, her pulse fading to a ghostly flutter.

"Rosa!" Dante roared, gripping her shoulders, shaking her with fierce, desperate love. "Rosa, fight it!"

Suddenly, Rosa’s spine arched violently. She drew in a massive, ragged gasp of air that sounded like tearing silk, her chest heaving as the antidote collided with the dormant toxin in her blood cells. The dusky blue tint drained rapidly from her lips, replaced by a violent flush of natural pink. Her eyes snapped open, blazing with life, focusing instantly on Dante’s terrified, soot-streaked face.

"Dante..." she whispered, coughing hard, her hand instinctively reaching up to touch his stubbled jaw. "I... I can breathe."

Dante buried his face against her neck, letting out a long, ragged exhale that sounded almost like a sob, his muscular frame trembling with sheer relief. "You are alive. You are here."

Sophia leaned over, patting Dante’s broad shoulder twice with a firm, condescending pat—the exact gesture Dante used when comforting a flustered underboss.

"Good job, Daddy," Sophia praised solemnly. "You fixed Mommy. Now we need to go upstairs. My shoes are dirty."

Rosa let out a weak, tearful laugh through her ragged breathing, wrapping one arm around Dante's neck and pulling Sophia tightly into her lap with the other. "Sophia... what did you do to that man with the brass bird?"

"I introduced myself," Sophia replied matter-of-factly, dusting off her sweater. "He didn't bow. So I helped him fall down."

Dante pulled back, looking at his daughter with a mixture of overwhelming pride and deep, unsettling awe. She was not just a survivor of the Falcone bloodline; she was its purest, most dangerous distillation.

Before Dante could speak, the tactical radio on the dead scientist’s belt crackled to life from the floor below.

A new voice emerged through the speaker—not the synthetic modulator of the Archivist, but an aristocratic, elderly voice speaking with a heavy northern Italian accent:

May you like

*"Dante. If you can hear this, your wife has received the stabilizer. Which means you now understand what you possess. But look at the perimeter cameras on the north ridge. You have killed my harvest squad. Now, meet the army that built your family."*
