Chapter 18 - THE REVELATION OF ELENA

Vance slumped against the base of the desk, clutching his bleeding wrist, his eyes wide with wild, frantic defeat. He looked up at Dante’s cold gray eyes, realizing that every avenue of escape, bribe, or deception had been permanently sealed shut.

"Where... where is she?" Vance gasped, his voice raspy and broken. "Where is Elena?"

Dante’s gray eyes narrowed. "You tell me, Vance. You're the one who hunted her for three years."

Vance let out a bitter, wet laugh, shaking his head slowly against the mahogany desk. "I didn't hunt her, you fool... I never found her! On the night she vanished, she didn't run from my men! She ran to the only person in this city who had the power to hide a pregnant Falcone heiress from the entire syndicate!"

Dante’s posture went entirely rigid. "Who?"

"Sister Beatrice..." Vance wheezed, wiping blood from his chin. "The Mother Superior at Saint Jude's Sanctuary on the north ridge... Elena took refuge in the convent three years ago. She lived behind those stone walls under a fake name... she gave birth to the child there... and she placed the girl in the foster system three weeks ago when she knew her illness was terminal!"

Dante felt a sudden, sharp pang in his chest. Terminal illness.

"What are you talking about?" Dante demanded, his hand gripping Vance’s lapel, hoisting the older man six inches off the floor. "What illness?!"

"She was sick, Dante!" Vance cried out, wincing in pain. "She had aggressive blood cancer! She knew she only had months to live! That's why she set this whole damn thing up! She knew you'd find the painting... she knew the foster agency would place the child with Rosa... she set the entire trap so you would adopt Sophia and take down the council after she was gone!"

Dante held his uncle suspended in mid-air for three long seconds as the full, tragic beauty of his sister's final Masterpiece unfolded in his mind.

Elena hadn't abandoned him. She hadn't fled out of fear or greed. She had been dying. And in her final months on earth, she had used every ounce of her brilliant, artistic mind to craft a master plan that would protect her innocent daughter, expose the traitors in her family, and deliver her child directly into the broad, protective arms of the only man on earth capable of keeping her safe: her brother Dante.

Slowly, deliberately, Dante lowered Vance back down to the floorboards.

He stood up to his full height, looking down at his uncle with cold, absolute finality.

"Marco!" Dante called out toward the hallway.

Marco stepped into the study, his weapon holstered, two armed house guards standing right behind him. "Here, Boss."

"Take Vance down to the holding cell under the east garage," Dante ordered smoothly. "Call federal prosecutor Miller. Hand over this amber vial, Elena's ledger, and Vance's complete financial records. Tell Miller the Falcone syndicate is turning state's evidence against the Moretti network."

Marco’s eyes widened in profound respect. "Understood, Boss. And what about the family trust?"

Dante reached into his vest pocket, touching the small plastic toy ring with the pink bow.

"The trust belongs to the new head of this family," Dante declared softly. "My niece, Sophia."
