Chapter 1 - THE SHADOWS OF THE FALCONE ESTATE

The late afternoon sun poured through the arched stained-glass windows of the grand corridor of the Falcone estate, casting long, golden geometric patterns across the polished white Italian marble floor. The mansion was a breathtaking display of old-world European opulence combined with modern security—a sprawling fortress nestled on an isolated estate. Towering crystal chandeliers hung from the high vaulted ceilings, catching the warm orange rays of the sun and scattering shimmering specks of light across hand-carved mahogany paneling, gilded wall sconces, and priceless Renaissance oil paintings.

Despite the sunlit beauty, an air of heavy, suffocating silence gripped the grand hallway. The house staff—maidservants in traditional black dresses, butler assistants in crisp suits, and burly security personnel in tailored tactical suits—moved like ghosts along the perimeter. They spoke only in whispered tones, careful never to draw unnecessary attention to themselves. Everyone who stepped foot inside the Falcone estate understood one fundamental rule: the hall belonged to Dante Falcone, and interrupting his evening routine was an error no one survived twice.

At thirty-eight years old, Dante Falcone was a figure of absolute authority and unspoken terror. As the reigning head of the Falcone syndicate, his name carried weight across international borders. He was exceptionally tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, possessing a powerful frame that commanded instant submission. His dark, wavy hair was brushed back cleanly from a forehead marked by quiet contemplation, framing sharp, masculine features, a hard jawline, and piercing gray eyes that seemed to read the innermost thoughts of everyone he encountered. Faint, dark ink of intricate syndicate tattoos peeked out from the side of his neck and the upper exposed notch of his chest.

Because the estate was both his private sanctuary and the command center of a multi-million-dollar empire, Dante’s appearance was always flawless. He wore an expensive, custom-fitted black suit that contoured perfectly to his broad shoulders, paired with a high-end black dress shirt left unbuttoned at the top collar, revealing the slight edge of his chest tattoos. Tailored black trousers, hand-crafted polished leather shoes that clinked softly against the marble, and a limited-edition platinum luxury watch on his left wrist completed his formidable ensemble. He was controlled, terrifyingly efficient, and emotionally closed off from the rest of the world.

Dante stepped out of his private study at the far end of the hallway, folding both hands securely behind his back in his signature stance. His expression was a stone mask of brooding stoicism as he began his daily slow walk down the long, echoing corridor.

What Dante did not notice, however, was that exactly seven paces behind him, a tiny, four-year-old girl was silently keeping pace with him.

Sophia, the four-year-old daughter of the estate’s housemaid Rosa Bennett, was the complete antithesis of the cold mafia estate. She had soft brown hair styled in two neat ponytails secured with pink satin bows, a round, highly expressive face, and wide, bright eyes filled with endless curiosity. She wore a simple lavender floral dress, crisp white lace socks, and pale leather shoes. Tucked neatly into the front pocket of her dress was her favorite purple crayon—a small object she carried everywhere like a prized treasure. Sophia was completely fearless, utterly oblivious to the dangerous underworld hierarchy, and possessing a heart pure enough to challenge the darkest shadows of the mansion.

As Dante walked, his long legs taking measured, heavy steps, tiny Sophia matched his rhythm step for step.

Dante paused briefly, rolling his shoulders back to straighten his spine. Seven paces behind him, Sophia stopped, puffed out her tiny chest dramatically, and threw her chin into the air with exaggerated importance.

Dante let out a faint sigh, his heavy brows knitting together in a subtle, brooding frown as he stared toward the locked mahogany sitting-room door halfway down the hall.

Behind him, Sophia immediately screwed up her tiny face into an exact, highly dramatic copy of his stern frown, glaring fiercely at the back of his black suit jacket.

Two butler assistants standing near a display of antique porcelain took one look at the tiny four-year-old imitating the terrifying mafia boss, and their eyes widened in sheer horror. They quickly pressed their hands over their mouths, their shoulders shaking violently as they struggled desperately not to burst into uncontrollable laughter. A housemaid polishing a silver sconce nearly dropped her cloth, turning her face toward the marble wall to hide her broad grin.

At that exact moment, Rosa Bennett stepped out from the staff service doorway carrying a tray of fresh linens.

Rosa, twenty-nine, was a quiet, hardworking single mother who had worked at the estate for two years. Beautiful yet deeply modest, she kept her warm brown hair pinned back in a loose, practical bun. She wore a classic black maid dress with a sharp white collar, folded white cuffs, and a pristine white apron tied tightly around her waist. Her whole life revolved around protecting her daughter and keeping her job.

Rosa took one look down the corridor, saw her tiny daughter marching right behind the most feared mobster in the region while aggressively mimicking his facial expressions, and felt her heart plunge into her stomach. Her face went completely drain of color.

"Oh, God..." Rosa gasped in a panicked whisper, dropping the linen tray onto a side table and stepping frantically into the hall.
