Chapter 14 - THE TIGER IN THE FOYER

The grand foyer of the Falcone estate was a massive, two-story marble atrium illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier that cast brilliant, sparkling light across the polished white floorboards. Double staircases curved gracefully up to the second-floor mezzanine, while high arched doorways led to the private residential wings.

Standing in the center of the marble floor was Vance Falcone.

At fifty-eight, Vance looked like the picture of executive elegance. He wore a bespoke charcoal wool overcoat over a three-piece gray suit, a gold signet ring glistening on his left pinky finger. His silver hair was neatly swept back, his sharp features relaxed into an expression of patient, polite authority. Flanking him on either side were six heavily armed syndicate enforcers wearing dark tactical coats, their hands resting conspicuously near their unbuttoned jackets.

Standing near the base of the left staircase were four of Dante’s private house guards, their faces tense, their hands hovering near their belts as they monitored the unexpected guests.

The heavy double doors leading from the study hallway swung open with a slow, echoing creak.

Dante stepped out into the bright chandelier light of the foyer.

He moved with a slow, predatory grace, his tall, broad frame dominating the space instantly. He wore his tailored dark suit, his jacket buttoned over his muscular chest, holding four-year-old Sophia securely in his left arm. The little girl carried her battered stuffed rabbit under one arm, her purple crayon tucked into her dress pocket, looking out at the imposing group of armed men with curious, wide eyes.

Vance Falcone turned toward the sound of Dante’s footsteps. A smooth, warm smile spread across his face, though his dark eyes narrowed slightly as he registered the child in his nephew's arms.

"Dante, my boy," Vance said smoothly, spreading his hands in an expansive gesture of false warmth. "Forgive the unannounced intrusion. But rumor reached the council that you suddenly locked down the estate grounds two hours ago. We were concerned there was a threat to your security."

Dante stopped at the base of the grand staircase, ten feet away from his uncle. His gray eyes were unblinking, cold, and utterly unreadable.

"My estate security is fine, Uncle Vance," Dante replied, his deep voice ringing clearly across the marble atrium. "I locked the gates because I was conducting private family business inside my study."

Vance’s gaze drifted from Dante’s face down to Sophia. His eyes locked onto her pale cream-and-lavender dress, then moved to the cheap pink plastic rings securing her ponytails. A subtle, almost imperceptible twitch occurred at the corner of Vance’s mouth—a micro-expression of sudden, sharp alarm that did not escape Dante’s notice.

"I see," Vance said softly, taking one slow step closer. "And who is this little visitor, Dante? I didn't know you had taken an interest in foster charity work."

Sophia squeezed Dante’s neck slightly, leaning her head closer to his ear. "Mr. Dante," she whispered softly, her small voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "That man smells like old cigars. I don't like his face."

A soft chuckle rippled from one of Dante’s guards on the balcony above.

Dante did not smile, but his hand squeezed Sophia’s back with protective warmth.

"She is my guest, Vance," Dante said flatly. "Now state your real business here, before I have my perimeter team escort your guards back through the main gates."

Vance’s warm smile slowly faded, replaced by a cold, calculating mask that revealed his true nature. He reached into his overcoat pocket, pulling out a silver cigar case, popping it open with a sharp click.

"My business is the survival of this family, Dante," Vance said, selecting a cigar without looking up. "Three years ago, your sister Elena disappeared with fifty million dollars in encrypted syndicate reserves. The council has been patient. We allowed you to search for her. We allowed you to keep her studio intact. But tonight... we received a tip that Elena’s private ledger was located inside this house."

Vance snapped his gold lighter, the small flame illuminating his cold eyes as he lit his cigar. He blew a long plume of blue smoke toward the ceiling.

"Hand over the ledger, Dante," Vance commanded smoothly. "And hand over the child."
