Chapter 4 - THE ECHO OF LAUGHTER

The silence returned to the marble corridor, but its nature had entirely changed. It was no longer a silence of fear, but one of profound, emotional weight. Rosa held her breath from her position on the floor, her eyes shifting frantically between her fearless daughter and the formidable man standing above her.

Sophia stepped an inch closer, her pale shoes almost touching the tip of Dante’s luxury leather footwear. She looked up into his gray eyes with pure, unadulterated sincerity.

"You walk by yourself every day," Sophia said softly, her tiny voice filling the vast space.

She paused, tilting her head as her pink bows swayed slightly in the warm draft of the hallway.

"So I walk too."

For three long seconds, Dante Falcone simply stared at the four-year-old child. The feared head of the Falcone syndicate, a man who had faced down ruthless enemies and commanded armies of men without ever losing his composure, stood completely disarmed by a servant's daughter.

Then, something happened that no person inside the Falcone estate had witnessed in over half a decade.

Dante’s chest expanded, his shoulders dropped, and a low, genuine laugh erupted from his throat.

The rich, deep sound of his laughter echoed off the high marble ceilings, bouncing off the crystal chandeliers and reflecting through the gilded archways. It was not a cold, mocking chuckle, but a warm, full-bodied laugh born of genuine amusement and broken isolation.

Every single servant and security guard in the corridor froze in absolute, unadulterated disbelief.

The guard who had been hiding his face turned back, his jaw practically dropping to the floor. The butler assistants stood paralyzed near the porcelain display, staring at their master as if he had transformed into a completely different person before their very eyes.

Rosa stared up from her knees, her eyes wide, her mouth slightly open, completely stunned into silence. She had worked in this house for two years, enduring Dante's cold, silent demeanor, never once believing the man was capable of making such a sound.

Sophia grinned proudly, her bright cheeks dimpling as she folded her tiny arms over her lavender floral dress.

"There," Sophia declared triumphantly.

May you like

Dante wiped a corner of his eye with his broad thumb, his hard features still relaxed in a rare, handsome smile.

"There what?" Dante asked, leaning down slightly toward her.
