Chapter 22 - THE SANCTUARY ON THE NORTH RIDGE

A fleet of three dark, armored luxury SUVs wound their way up the steep, pine-lined roads leading to the north ridge of the city. Rain from the previous night’s storm still dripped from the tall evergreen branches, catching the bright sunlight in sparkling drops against the dark asphalt. In the middle vehicle, Dante sat in the spacious leather back seat, holding Sophia securely in her child safety seat beside him.

Sophia pressed her small nose against the tinted window, her wide brown eyes watching the tall mountain pines pass by. She held her pink plastic bow ring in her lap, turning it over and over in her small fingers—a simple toy that had once sat on the narrow ledge of a hidden safe, waiting for this exact day.

Beside them in the front passenger seat, Marco kept a watchful eye on the road ahead, though his demeanor was relaxed. The threat of Vance Falcone was entirely neutralized; the federal authorities were processing the traitors, and the remaining syndicate bosses were bowing to Dante’s absolute rule.

The SUVs turned off the main road and passed through a set of high, ancient iron gates set into an imposing stone wall. Nestled among the dense pine trees stood Saint Jude’s Sanctuary—a tranquil, hundred-year-old stone convent with arched stained-glass windows, a high bell tower, and lush, blooming rose gardens that overlooked the entire valley below.

The convoy came to a smooth stop along the cobbled driveway. Dante stepped out first, adjusting his dark suit jacket before reaching back inside to unbuckle Sophia. He lifted her into his arms, holding her close as the cool, crisp mountain air filled their lungs.

Waiting near the heavy timber doors of the convent was Mother Superior Beatrice. She was an elderly woman with deep, compassionate lines etched around her eyes, wrapped in simple black robes. Beside her stood two younger nuns who looked on with warm, solemn expressions.

Dante walked up the stone steps, his heavy leather shoes clicking against the wet cobbles. He stopped in front of Mother Superior Beatrice, bowing his head in quiet respect.

"Mr. Falcone," Mother Superior Beatrice said, her voice soft, resonant, and filled with deep spiritual weight. "We have waited three long years for this day. I see you have brought the child home."

Dante looked down at Sophia, who was peeking curiously from behind his shoulder. "Sister Beatrice... Vance told me she was here. That my sister spent her final months within these walls."

Sister Beatrice’s eyes welled with quiet tears as she reached out a frail, gentle hand to touch Sophia’s arm. "Elena came to us on a cold, stormy night three years ago, fleeing the shadows that sought to destroy her family. She was carrying this precious child within her. She lived here under our care, fighting her illness with a courage that moved every soul in this sanctuary."

"Did she... did she leave something for us?" Dante asked, his gravelly voice tightening with emotion.

"She left her heart, Mr. Falcone," Sister Beatrice replied softly. She turned and gestured toward the quiet inner courtyard of the convent. "Follow me. Her private studio remains exactly as she left it on the day she returned to God."
