Chapter 37 - THE ENVOY FROM PALERMO

At precisely two o'clock in the afternoon, a sleek, armored black Maserati with diplomatic plates glided up the winding cobblestone driveway of the Falcone estate.
Two sentries at the iron gates inspected the vehicle with mirrors and canine units before clearing it through.
Stepping out of the vehicle was not an old, weathered Don from the mountains of Sicily, but a man in his early thirties: Matteo Valenti, the grand-nephew of Don Corrado. He was dressed in an impeccably tailored three-piece charcoal suit, wearing leather gloves and a silk cravat, carrying himself with the haughty, dismissive arrogance of old European aristocracy.
He was escorted into the grand sunlit conservatory by Luca and four heavily armed Falcone sentries.
Dante sat casually on a wicker armchair surrounded by towering ferns, blooming white orchids, and glass walls overlooking the sweeping lawn. A low glass table between them held an untouched espresso pot and two delicate porcelain cups.
Matteo Valenti entered the room, his eyes flicking disdainfully over the armed guards before settling on Dante with a patronizing smirk.
"Don Dante Falcone," Matteo spoke with a crisp, aristocratic Italian accent, peeling off his leather gloves one finger at a time. "The legendary shadow of the western seaboard. My great-uncle sends his fondest regards from Palermo."
Dante did not stand. He did not offer his hand. He merely sat back, his gray eyes pinning Matteo to the floor with lethal weight.
"You have five minutes, Valenti," Dante said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth. "Make them count."
Matteo chuckled softly, walking over to the glass table and sliding a leather portfolio across the surface. "We do not need five minutes to state the obvious, Falcone. We know about the child. Sophia. The direct blood of Elena Valenti."
The air in the conservatory grew instantly thin. The guards along the perimeter shifted their weight, their hands resting on their submachine guns.
"She is the rightful heir to the Valenti territories," Matteo continued, leaning forward with an arrogant gleam in his dark eyes. "Our patriarch is an old man without surviving sons. The ancient pact demands that the bloodline be united. We have not come to fight you, Falcone. We have come to claim what belongs to Palermo. The girl will return with us to Sicily, where she will be educated and betrothed to a worthy scion of the Commission."
Dante remained motionless. Not a single muscle in his jaw twitched. But those who knew Dante Falcone knew that this terrifying, absolute stillness meant a bloodbath was brewing behind his eyes.
"And if I refuse?" Dante asked softly.
Matteo smiled, tapping the leather portfolio. "Then the entire Atlantic Syndicate Council will declare you an oath-breaker. Your supply routes will be seized. Your assets frozen. You cannot fight the Old Continent, Dante. It is simpler to hand over the maid’s bastard and keep your empire."
The insult hung in the air like poison.
Before Dante could rise from his seat to snap Matteo's neck with his bare hands, the glass doors leading to the interior terrace swung open with a cheerful *bang*.
"Daddy!"
Sophia marched into the conservatory, wearing her bespoke midnight-navy coat, carrying her one-eared bear Barnaby by his hind leg. In her other hand, she clutched a half-eaten pink frosted doughnut.
Behind her, Rosa entered quickly, her face taut with protective anxiety, but maintaining an elegant, unshakeable composure.
Matteo turned around, his eyes widening in shock as the little girl marched directly up to the glass table.
Sophia stopped in front of Matteo. She looked up at his pristine charcoal trousers, then at his fancy silk cravat, and finally at his arrogant face.
She wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"You smell like ladies' perfume," Sophia announced loudly, her clear voice ringing through the entire conservatory.
A choked sound escaped Luca’s throat near the doorway.
Matteo blinked, utterly thrown off balance by the tiny intruder. "Excuse me?"
"You are wearing too much perfume," Sophia repeated sternly, pointing her frosted doughnut at his chest. "It makes my nose tickle. Daddy smells like pine trees and coffee. You smell like soap bubbles."
Matteo’s face flushed a deep crimson. "Listen here, you little—"
"Do not finish that sentence, boy," Dante’s voice cut through the air like a guillotine.
Dante rose to his full height, towering over Matteo like an approaching thunderstorm. He stepped forward, placing a gentle hand atop Sophia’s head, pulling her softly against his leg. Sophia happily leaned against Dante's knee, taking another bite of her pink doughnut while glaring suspiciously at the foreign guest.
"This is Donna Sophia Falcone," Dante declared, his voice echoing off the glass panes with terrifying, sovereign finality. "She is the sole heir to this house, to my name, and to every bullet in my arsenal. Tell Don Corrado that the ancient accord is officially terminated. If a single Valenti soldier sets foot within fifty miles of this estate, I will personally hang your great-uncle from the balconies of his own villa in Palermo."
Matteo swallowed hard, stepping back involuntarily as Dante’s murderous aura pressed down upon him like lead. He looked at Sophia, who was currently licking pink frosting off her thumb while watching him with Dante’s exact, unblinking glare.
"You are starting a war, Falcone," Matteo hissed through clenched teeth, though his voice trembled.
May you like
"No," Dante replied with a chilling, merciless grin. "I am ending one. Get out of my house."
