Chapter 38 - SHADOWS ON THE PERIMETER

The night was unusually dark, smothered under a heavy blanket of storm clouds that obscured the moon and stars. The wind howled through the tall pines on the north ridge, rattling the heavy leaded windows of the Falcone manor.

In the command security room beneath the east wing, Marco sat before a bank of twenty high-definition monitors. The screens displayed real-time thermal feeds, infrared scans, and motion sensors covering every square inch of the estate's ten-foot perimeter walls.

Beside Marco stood Sophia.

She had dragged a metal swivel stool over to the console, sitting atop it with her arms crossed over her chest. Over her flannel pajamas, she had insisted on wearing a miniature tactical vest Marco had jokingly fashioned for her out of black canvas, complete with velcro patches that held three purple crayons and a plastic walkie-talkie.

"Sector four is clear, Donna Sophia," Marco reported solemnly, pointing to a thermal camera displaying the north gate.

Sophia leaned forward, squinting through her plastic toy magnifying glass at the monitor. "What about the squirrels, Marco? Are the squirrels authorized personnel?"

"The squirrels have received temporary clearance, Donna," Marco answered with complete seriousness. "However, their nuts remain subject to random search and seizure."

Sophia nodded sagely. "Good security procedure, Marco. You may have a jelly bean."

She reached into her vest pocket and placed a single red jelly bean on the console next to Marco’s keyboard.

Before Marco could thank his miniature superior, a sharp, pulsing red alarm flashed across monitor seven.

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

A motion sensor on the north perimeter ridge had tripped. Simultaneously, the infrared camera on sector nine went completely black—not static, but clean black, indicating a severed fiber-optic wire.

Marco’s playful demeanor evaporated in a nanosecond. His fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard, bringing up secondary sensors.

"Thermal drop on the north wall," Marco muttered into his tactical headset, his voice hardened into combat readiness. "Teams two and four, sweep the perimeter road. We have a wire cut."

Sophia looked at the flashing red light on the screen. She didn't cry or panic. She picked up her plastic walkie-talkie, pressed the side button with her thumb, and puffed out her chest.

"Daddy!" she spoke into the plastic toy. "We have an unauthorized wire situation! Bring the big boots!"

Behind them, the heavy steel door of the command room hissed open. Dante walked in, fully dressed in black combat tactical gear, a heavy sidearm holstered securely at his hip. His eyes swept across the monitors, absorbing the data instantly.

"Report, Marco," Dante commanded.

"Three heat signatures breached the outer treeline two minutes ago, Boss," Marco answered rapidly. "They used military-grade frequency jammers to disable camera nine. They aren't local thugs. This is a trained strike team. Valenti’s private mercenaries."

Dante’s jaw tightened, his eyes flashing with lethal anticipation. "They think they can probe my defenses while my family sleeps."

Sophia hopped down from her swivel stool, running over to Dante and tugging on his combat trousers. "Daddy! Consigliere Barnaby is guarding Mama's bedroom door! I inspected the guards! Everyone is ready for battle!"

Dante knelt down before her, his large hands resting on her small tactical vest. He looked into her bright, fearless brown eyes, overwhelmed by the fierce warrior spirit contained within her tiny four-year-old body.

"You did an exceptional job, Donna Sophia," Dante murmured, his voice softening with immense love and pride. "Your perimeter watch caught them before they could reach the inner gardens."

"Are we going to take their crayons, Daddy?" she whispered fiercely.

"We are going to take everything from them, sweetheart," Dante promised with a dark, reassuring smile. He tapped her walkie-talkie. "Now, your mission is to go back to Mama’s suite with Luca. You will hold the high ground. Do not leave her side until I return. Can you do that for me, Donna?"

Sophia snapped a crisp, perfect military salute with her right hand. "Mission accepted, Daddy. Hold the high ground!"

Luca immediately stepped forward, gently lifting Sophia into his arms. Sophia waved her plastic walkie-talkie at Dante as Luca carried her out toward the reinforced security suite on the upper level.

Once the steel door sealed shut behind them, Dante rose to his feet. All warmth vanished from his features. The dark god of the underworld stepped forward, his eyes blazing with cold, unrestrained vengeance.

"Lock down the gates, Marco," Dante ordered, his voice echoing like rolling thunder through the steel bunker. "Release the hounds. No survivors."
