Chapter 55 - ASHES AND IRON

The explosion did not destroy the room; it ignited the low-hanging methane pocket in a rolling, deafening wave of blue and orange fire that swept across the lower floor like a dragon’s breath.

The shockwave knocked the gray-armored soldiers off their feet, their carbon shields shattering under the sudden pressure wave. The high-heat blast instantly fried the electronic visors and respiratory systems of their pressurized suits, filling their helmets with smoke and static.

"Scatter!" the squad leader screamed, rolling across the stone floor to extinguish his burning sleeve. "Fall back to the intake tunnel!"

From the catwalk above, Dante dropped like a predatory hawk, landing with a heavy, controlled roll directly onto the shoulders of the nearest disoriented soldier. Before the man could recover, Dante drove a combat blade straight through the neck seal of his ballistic vest, ripping the carbine from his dying grip and opening fire on the remaining soldiers at point-blank range.

The chamber erupted into a ferocious storm of deafening gunfire. Dante moved with fluid, terrifying lethality, using the heavy iron pillars as rotating cover. Every shot from his carbine found a vital seam in their high-tech armor. Two soldiers collapsed instantly with double taps to the head; a third was hurled backward into an empty slag pit by a heavy burst to the chest.

Up on the catwalk, Rosa leaned over the railing, fighting through the blinding pain in her lungs, her eyes fixed on Dante as he dismantled the strike team with mechanical ruthlessness. But beside her, Sophia was not watching Dante.

Sophia’s gaze was fixed on the far ladder.

The geneticist in the white coat, having survived the methane flash by diving behind a steel vat, was frantically scrambling up the service ladder toward the mezzanine, clutching a titanium medical case containing a pressurized bone-marrow extraction rig. His eyes were wide with fanatical greed, locked squarely on Sophia.

"Rosa! The ladder!" Dante roared from the floor below, but he was pinned by the remaining two soldiers laying down suppressive fire behind an iron crucible.

Rosa raised her pistol, aiming with shaking hands at the approaching scientist. But her fingers were completely numb, the genetic toxin finally paralyzing the motor nerves in her forearms. The heavy gun slipped from her slick grip, clattering uselessly across the metal grating.

"No!" Rosa choked, lunging forward on her hands and knees.

The geneticist cleared the top of the ladder, stepping onto the catwalk with a wicked, serrated pneumatic syringe drawn in his right hand. "Stay still, little girl," he hissed, his face blackened by soot, his eyes wild. "You are going to save your mother... whether you survive it or not."

He lunged toward Sophia, reaching out with an armored glove to seize her shoulder.

Sophia did not scream. She did not flinch backward.

Instead, the four-year-old child reached into the deep pocket of her father’s oversized navy sweater and pulled out the heavy, solid-brass paperweight Dante had given her in the study—a dense, four-pound sculpted falcon with sharp, hooked wings.

With all the leverage of her small body, swinging with the exact low-angled momentum Dante had demonstrated when teaching her how to throw a chess piece, Sophia smashed the heavy bronze sculpture directly into the bridge of the scientist’s nose.

The impact was sickeningly loud. Bone shattered instantly. The geneticist screamed, clutching his crushed face as blood sprayed through his fingers, stumbling backward on the narrow grating.

"You have bad manners," Sophia said coldly, stepping forward with her chin high.

She planted her small shoe firmly against the man’s knee, giving him a sharp, precise shove.

The geneticist lost his balance, flipped over the rusted balustrade, and plunged forty feet down, landing with a crushing thud directly onto the concrete floor below, right at Dante Falcone's boots.
