Chapter 28 - LESSONS IN THE DARK

Night settled fully over the Falcone estate, wrapping the vast property in a peaceful, starry blanket. The heavy iron gates at the perimeter remained locked, guarded by elite security personnel who moved silently along the stone walls, ensuring that no shadow could ever breach the sanctuary within.
Inside the second-floor residential wing, Dante carried a sleepy, yawning Sophia down the softly lit hallway toward her new bedroom. The room had been completely renovated over the course of the afternoon—decorated with soft lavender drapes, plush cream carpets, carved white wooden furniture, and walls lined with framed art paper ready for her future drawings.
Dante laid her gently down on the massive canopy bed, pulling the soft silk duvet up to her chest. He tucked her stuffed rabbit under her arm, making sure her pink plastic bow ring was placed safely on her bedside nightstand alongside her box of crayons.
Sophia rubbed her heavy eyes with her small fist, looking up at Dante as he sat on the edge of her mattress.
"Daddy?" Sophia whispered sleepily, her small voice trailing off into the quiet room.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Dante asked softly, reaching down to gently brush a stray lock of brown hair from her forehead.
"Are the bad men ever coming back?"
Dante’s gray eyes grew steady, filled with an unshakeable, fierce conviction that banished every linger of fear from the room.
"No, Sophia," Dante said firmly, his low baritone wrapping around her like an impenetrable fortress. "The bad men are gone forever. No one will ever hurt you, no one will ever take you away, and no one will ever make you feel unsafe again. I give you my word as your father."
Sophia let out a long, contented sigh, her small body relaxing completely into the plush pillows. "Because you're the strongest daddy in the whole wide world?"
"Because I love you more than life itself," Dante rasped softly.
May you like
Sophia smiled sweetly, her long eyelashes slowly fluttering shut as exhaustion finally claimed her tiny body. Within minutes, her breathing became soft, rhythmic, and peaceful, her small hand loosely holding the edge of her blanket.
Dante remained sitting on the edge of her bed for a long time in the quiet room, watching his daughter sleep. He reached out and gently squeezed her tiny hand, swearing a silent, sacred oath to his sister Elena, to himself, and to God that he would spend every remaining day of his life nurturing the light inside this child.
