Chapter 4 - DRAWN LINES AND Escalation

The atmosphere inside the foyer snapped like a bowstring.

Daniel took one sharp step toward the base of the stairs, intent on securing the upper floor. But Thomas moved instantly to block him, planting his feet on the bottom stair, his chest broad, his face flushing red with sudden, dark rage.

"You’re not going upstairs," Thomas snarled, his breathing heavy, his dark shirt straining across his shoulders.

"Mr. Miller, step off the stairs now!" Daniel commanded, lifting one hand in an open-palm gesture while his right hand unclipped the retention strap on his belt. "Step aside!"

Instead of complying, Thomas’s right hand twitched, reaching swiftly behind his hip toward his waistband.

"Show me your hands!" Daniel yelled, the training kicking in instantly as he drew his yellow Taser X2 from its holster, driving the twin laser sights straight onto the center of Thomas’s dark T-shirt. "Show me your hands right now!"

"Daniel, watch his right side!" María shouted, using her left arm to sweep Emily completely behind the corner wall toward the front door, keeping the child entirely clear of the line of fire.

At that precise moment, the front door burst open behind them. Backup had arrived—Officer Miller (no relation), a tall patrol officer, rushed into the foyer, taking in the scene in a fraction of a second.

"Get on the ground! Do it now!" Officer Miller barked, sweeping in from the side before Thomas could pull whatever was at his hip. With practiced, blunt efficiency, the second officer grabbed Thomas’s right arm, forcing it up behind his back, driving him down onto his knees against the hardwood floor.

"Get off me! You have no right! There’s nothing up there!" Thomas screamed, his face pressed against the floorboards as the metallic click-click-click of handcuffs echoed sharply over the blaring sound of the living room television.

Emily didn't watch her father being restrained. She sat huddled against the baseboards near the door, her eyes glued with absolute terror to the dark opening at the top of the stairs. She squeezed her stuffed rabbit so hard that another tiny thread snapped near its neck.

"It’s okay, Emily," María murmured, kneeling over her, keeping her eyes on both the child and the upstairs landing. "They’ve got him. He can't hurt you."

Daniel lowered his Taser, re-holstering it with a firm click. He took a deep, steadying breath, adjusted his body camera, and turned his full focus toward the stairs.

The blaring television continued to scream about discounts and kitchen products from the living room, but as Daniel took his first heavy step onto the carpeted stair runner, a different sound cut cleanly through the noise.
