Chapter 25 - THE TAPE RECORDING

"This is Evelyn Thornton," the recorded voice began, calm and precise despite a faint tremor in her breath. "The date is October twelfth, two-thousand-eighteen. If you are listening to this tape, it means I have been removed from my post at the Records Bureau, and my daughter Emily is no longer safe at our home on Oak Street."

María stepped closer to the machine, her face illuminated by the amber glow of the tape deck's small signal meter.

"For three years," Evelyn’s voice continued, "I have documented the systematic falsification of property records across the Riverbend district. Over forty families were forcibly displaced under false environmental hazards to allow the Riverbend Investment Group to acquire three hundred acres of prime waterfront real estate for pennies on the dollar. The head of this group is Eleanor Jenkins."

Daniel closed his eyes for a short second, digesting the name. Eleanor Jenkins—the seemingly harmless, frail old woman who had stood on the lawn of Elmwood Lane in a heavy wool shawl, weeping softly as the police escorted Emily away.

"Eleanor Jenkins has built a network of protection that extends into the regional dispatch center, the land registry, and the local precinct," Evelyn’s tape rasped on. "She knows I have the ledgers. She has already threatened to use her legal guardianship authority to place Emily in an unlisted out-of-state facility if I attempt to contact the State Attorney General."

The recording paused, filled with the faint sound of a door closing in the background of the past.

"I have hidden the master ledgers in Sub-Level Three of the Archives Vault," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "I have placed the master key in the one place Eleanor will never look—inside the lining of Emily's stuffed rabbit, sealed beneath the photograph of our family. Emily does not know what the key opens, but she knows it represents her mother's promise. If anyone finds this archive... please. Protect my daughter. Don't let them turn Elmwood Lane into her grave."

The tape ended with a sharp, mechanical click.

The silence that followed was deafening. The dripping water deep within the corridor seemed to grow louder, dropping like lead weights onto the concrete floor.

Daniel looked at María. "We need to secure these boxes immediately. If Jenkins has contacts inside the precinct, she already knows we cleared the house."

Before María could answer, the heavy iron door at the top of the stairwell far down the hall slammed shut with a thunderous, metallic boom that echoed through the subterranean vaults.
