Chapter 18 - CLEARED FROM THE SHADOWS

By 02:00 AM, the forensic team had finished packing their heavy equipment cases into the back of their dark van.

The high-intensity LED light bars were powered down, leaving the gray room upstairs dark once more. But this time, the heavy oak door remained standing wide open, its locking mechanism fully disarmed and tagged as primary physical evidence by Detective Cole.

The house on Elmwood Lane was no longer a place of secret isolation.

Two uniformed officers remained stationed at the front entryway, securing the scene for additional secondary investigation scheduled for the morning. The yellow crime-scene tape stretched neatly across the front porch railing, marking the boundary of the official police perimeter.

Down on the driveway, Daniel walked back to his patrol cruiser to update his mobile computer terminal with his final shift notes.

He typed out the timeline of events with systematic precision:

02:14 - PERIMETER SECURED. 02:18 - SUBJECT EMILY MILLER PLACED UNDER TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. 02:22 - PRIMARY FORENSIC SWEEP OF SECOND-FLOOR STRUCTURE COMPLETED. 02:30 - SCENE TRANSITION TO ON-DUTY PATROL DETAIL PENDING AUNT ARRIVAL.

Daniel closed the laptop screen, leaning his head back against the leather headrest of his cruiser seat for a brief moment. He looked at the rear-view mirror, seeing the reflection of the house painted in the steady, rhythmically flashing blue lights.

He had worked four years on patrol in this district. He had responded to domestic disputes, traffic collisions, and false alarms. But tonight, standing on that porch listening to a small girl ask if the door was locked, he had felt the true weight of why he wore the badge.

He opened his cruiser door, stepped out into the cool night air, and walked back up the paved driveway toward the porch where his partner was waiting.
