Chapter 28 - THE CIRCUIT BREAK

The alley was quiet, shadowed by the towering stone walls of the surrounding warehouses. The crisp morning air felt clean and sharp after the suffocating darkness of Sub-Level Three.
María stood over the hatch, her chest heaving as she held her service weapon at the ready, watching the iron door for any sign of movement from below.
"The bar will hold them for five minutes," María said, wiping a smear of black coal dust from her forehead. "They’ll have to go back around through the main intake stairwell."
"That gives us enough time to hit the main relay," Daniel said, picking up the heavy nylon duffel containing the Thornton archive. "We're not taking this to the local precinct, María. If Jenkins has people on the local band, the precinct locker is compromised before we even log the evidence."
"Where then?" María asked, following him down the alley toward the waterfront road.
"State Police Barracks in Capital City," Daniel replied, pulling his personal cell phone from his pocket. Without the subterranean interference, the device immediately picked up four bars of encrypted satellite service. He dialed a direct line to Captain Vance at the State Bureau of Investigation.
"Captain Vance," Daniel said as the line connected on the second ring. "This is Officer Harris, County Patrol Unit Four-Seven. I have the Thornton ledgers, the Riverbend fraud files, and Evelyn Thornton's master recording."
"Harris?" Vance's voice came through crisp and authoritative over the speaker. "Where are you?"
"Alley behind Saint Jude’s Records. We were ambushed in Sub-Level Three by private contractors operating under Eleanor Jenkins' shell network."
A short pause followed on the line—the sound of heavy paper moving and a chair sliding across a tile floor.
"Listen to me very carefully, Harris," Captain Vance said, his tone dropping into a hard, protective register. "Ms. Jenkins was taken into custody twenty minutes ago at her estate on Elmwood Lane by a federal warrant team. We found six million dollars in offshore bearer bonds hidden inside her wall safe."
Daniel stopped at the corner of the alley, looking out over the river toward the suspension bridge that led out of the county. "And Emily?"
"Emily and Clara reached the safe house in Capital City ten minutes ago," Vance replied. "The child is safe, Harris. She’s eating breakfast with the state child welfare team right now. She refused to let go of that framed picture until she saw the state troopers take the desk logs."
Daniel let out a long, slow breath, the tension that had held his shoulders rigid since midnight finally beginning to dissolve.

"We're bringing the master evidence file directly to your office, Captain," Daniel said.
"I’m sending a two-car escort to meet you at the river bridge," Vance commanded. "Drive fast, Harris. Let's finish this."
