Chapter 19 - THE REUNION ON THE WALKWAY

At 02:40 AM, a yellow taxicab pulled up rapidly to the curb of Elmwood Lane.
Before the vehicle could fully stop, the rear door flew open, and a woman in her late thirties with shoulder-length brown hair and a heavy winter coat stepped out into the street. She carried a small overnight bag, her eyes wide with frantic, tearful relief as she scanned the emergency vehicles parked along the curb.
Clara Vance did not care about the flashing lights, the patrol officers, or the yellow crime-scene tape.
"Emily!" Clara cried out, her voice breaking as she sprinted up the paved walkway toward the house.
Emily stood up from the wooden porch step, the yellow emergency blanket slipping slightly from her shoulders as her blue eyes locked onto her aunt. She dropped her stuffed rabbit onto the wooden step and ran down the three porch stairs as fast as her small legs could carry her.
"Aunt Clara!" Emily sobbed.
Clara dropped her overnight bag onto the lawn and fell to her knees on the cold concrete path, catching Emily in a powerful, desperate embrace. She pulled the little girl tightly against her chest, burying her face in Emily’s curly brown hair, her body shaking with deep, emotional sobs.
"I'm here, baby," Clara wept, kissing Emily’s forehead over and over again. "I'm so sorry it took me so long. I'm here now. You're safe. You're never going back into that house again."
María stood near the porch railing, her dark eyes shining with quiet emotion as she watched the reunion. Beside her, Daniel offered a slow, satisfied nod, resting his hand against his utility belt.

Detective Cole walked down the steps, holding his clipboard and the official transfer paperwork for Clara to sign.
"Ms. Vance," Cole said gently. "We have the protective custody release ready for your signature. You can take her home tonight."
