Chapter 17 - THE ARRIVAL OF SOCIAL SERVICES

At 01:15 AM, a neutral, dark-gray sedan pulled up to the curb behind the forensic van.

A woman in a dark trench coat and glasses stepped out, holding a black briefcase and an official ID badge pinned to her lapel. Sarah Jenkins, a senior caseworker from the County Department of Child and Family Services, walked up the paved walkway toward the porch.

Detective Cole descended the front steps to meet her, handing over a copy of the preliminary protective custody order signed electronically by an emergency on-duty magistrate twenty minutes prior.

"How is the child?" Ms. Jenkins asked, her voice professional yet filled with genuine concern as she glanced toward the porch where María and Daniel sat with Emily.

"Traumatized, isolated, but physically stable," Detective Cole reported in a low baritone. "Fresh superficial contusions on the right wrist consistent with physical restraint. The father is currently processed at the central precinct under charges of child endangerment, unlawful restraint, and obstruction of justice. Mental health evaluation has been ordered."

"And the family placement?"

"Maternal aunt, Clara Vance," Cole replied, pointing to the notation on his clipboard. "Flight lands at 02:30 AM. Clear background check, state-certified home environment in the neighboring county. We’re holding the child here under temporary protective supervision until the aunt arrives."

Ms. Jenkins nodded approvingly, stepping up onto the porch steps with a warm, non-threatening smile.

"Hello, Emily," Ms. Jenkins said softly, kneeling down near the little girl. "My name is Sarah. I’m here to help Officer Vance and Officer Harris make sure you’re comfortable tonight."

Emily looked at Ms. Jenkins, then looked at Daniel and María. Seeing the reassuring nods from both officers, Emily offered a tiny, polite nod in return.

"My aunt is coming," Emily stated clearly, her voice gaining strength with every passing minute. "And she has a cat named Barnaby."

"I know Barnaby," Ms. Jenkins smiled softly. "He’s a very big orange cat who loves sunbeams. You’re going to be very safe with them."
