Chapter 29 - THE BRIDGE TO CAPITAL CITY

The suspension bridge spanning Saint Jude’s Creek was bathed in the bright, golden light of mid-morning. Below, the river flowed broad and grey toward the ocean, its surface sparkling under the clear autumn sky.
Daniel drove his cruiser across the steel expansion joints, the tires creating a rhythmic, comforting hum against the roadway. Beside him, María sat with the nylon duffel resting securely on her lap, watching the twin black sedans of the State Police escort detail pull into formation in front of and behind their patrol car.
The sirens were off. The red and blue strobe lights flashed silently against the morning air, carving a clear, uninterrupted path through the light morning traffic.
"She knew," María said softly, looking out at the water flowing beneath the bridge.
"Who?" Daniel asked gently.
"Evelyn," María said, turning to look at the heavy bag on her lap. "She knew she wouldn't live to see the end of Riverbend. But she trusted that someone would eventually listen to Emily. She trusted that the key wouldn't stay hidden forever."
"Evelyn was an archivist," Daniel said, his eyes fixed on the road ahead where the skyline of Capital City rose in the distance. "She understood that paper doesn't lie, and dark rooms don't stay closed forever once you bring a light into them. All she needed was time."

"And a seven-year-old girl who remembered her mother's promise," María added, a soft, rare smile appearing on her face.
They crossed the mid-span of the bridge, leaving the jurisdiction of Saint Jude’s County behind. In the rearview mirror, the dark stone towers of the Records Building and the quiet suburban contours of Elmwood Lane receded into the distance, looking small and powerless beneath the vast, open sky.
