Chapter 3 - THE SECRET UPSTAIRS

María didn't gasp. She didn't react outwardly in a way that would tip off the father. But her dark eyes hardened instantly, her body camera recording every detail of the marks on the child’s arm.

With a smooth, continuous motion, María gently took Emily by her uninjured right hand, pulling the little girl down from the stairs and shifting her entire small body directly behind her own back, using her uniform as a physical shield between Emily and Thomas Miller.

"You’re not in trouble, sweetheart," María whispered over her shoulder, her voice an anchor of absolute safety. "I’ve got you."

Thomas’s polite smile vanished. The friendly, cooperative facade cracked, revealing a cold, rigid tension beneath. His grip tightened around his water bottle until the plastic crinkled sharply in the quiet room.

"She needs to go back to bed," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a flat, commanding register that rang through the lower floor. "It’s past one in the morning, Officer. You’ve seen she’s fine. Leave my house."

Emily gripped the navy blue wool of María’s uniform sleeve with her trembling, uninjured hand, hiding her face against the officer's hip. She leaned up slightly, her voice a tiny, breathless whisper that carried straight into the microphone of María’s body camera:

"He says it’s our secret."

Daniel’s entire demeanor shifted. The veteran officer’s relaxed posture disappeared. His hand moved down to rest lightly near his duty belt, his boots pivoting to lock his stance against Thomas.

"Mr. Miller," Daniel said, his voice dropping into the deep, authoritative tone used when a scene transitions from inquiry to active investigation. "We are going to make sure Emily is completely safe before anyone goes anywhere."

"She’s my daughter!" Thomas snapped, taking a step forward. His eyes darted nervously past Daniel toward the top of the dark staircase behind them. "You don't have a warrant! You can't just stand in my hallway!"

Before Daniel could answer, Emily’s small hand reached out from behind María’s hip. Trembling violently, her finger extended upward, pointing directly toward the pitch-black hallway at the top of the second-floor stairs.

"Daddy’s snake is up there," Emily cried softly, her tear-stained face pale under the entryway light.

Daniel glanced back, his eyes tracking her finger toward the landing above. "Daddy’s snake?"

"She’s confused!" Thomas shouted, his voice rising in sudden, desperate aggression as he stepped directly into the path of the staircase. "She makes things up! She has an overactive imagination!"
