Chapter 20 - THE FINAL DEPARTURE FROM ELMWOOD LANE

The first pale grey light of dawn began to touch the eastern horizon over Elmwood Lane, softening the harsh glare of the emergency lights.

Clara sat in the back of a unmarked police sedan, wrapping her own heavy coat around Emily, who sat snuggled securely against her side. In Emily’s lap lay her gray stuffed rabbit, the framed photograph of her mother, and the small silver key attached to the blue ribbon.

Ms. Jenkins closed the rear passenger door, offering a warm wave through the tinted glass.

Daniel walked up to the driver’s side window, leaning down to speak with the transport officer. "Take them straight to the county line. Escort detail is already waiting at the border."

"Copy that, Harris," the transport officer nodded, shifting the sedan into drive.

Before the car pulled away, Emily rolled down her window an inch, her small face appearing through the opening. She looked at Officer Daniel Harris and Officer María Vance standing side by side on the sidewalk under the morning sky.

"Thank you, Daniel," Emily whispered softly, her blue eyes clear, bright, and completely free of fear. "Thank you for finding the key."

Daniel smiled warmly, touching the brim of his campaign hat in a crisp, respectful salute. "You keep that picture safe, Emily. Have a good trip home."

The police sedan pulled away from the curb, its red tail lights fading down Elmwood Lane as it turned the corner toward the highway, leaving the quiet suburban street behind forever.

Daniel and María stood on the curb, watching the vehicle vanish into the morning mist.

Behind them, the house on Elmwood Lane sat quiet, cold, and stripped of its secrets. The gray door upstairs stood wide open to the morning air, no longer a monument to isolation, but simply a doorway in an empty house whose dark hold had finally been broken for good.

The two officers turned, walked back to their patrol cruiser, and drove into the dawn of a new day.
