Chapter 24 - THE THORNTON ARCHIVE

María stepped into the cage first, her halogen lantern illuminating the smooth gray canvas covering the center desk. She grabbed the edge of the fabric and pulled it back in one smooth motion, sending a small cloud of fine gray dust puffing into the cold air.

Beneath the tarp lay three thick, leather-bound ledgers, a portable reel-to-reel audio tape recorder, and a sealed metal document box bearing the red wax stamp of the County Prosecutor's Office from October 2014.

Daniel stepped alongside her, shining his light directly onto the hand-written label on the metal box: PROJECT RIVERBEND: LAND ACQUISITION & RELOCATION FILES.

"Riverbend," María whispered, her hand hovering above the cold metal lid. "That was the industrial redevelopment project that cleared out the old east-side residential district ten years ago. The town council claimed the land was condemned due to soil contamination."

"Except it wasn't contaminated," Daniel said, lifting the heavy leather ledgers. He opened the first volume, revealing pages of meticulous, handwritten entries in Evelyn Thornton’s elegant cursive script. "Look at these dates, María. Evelyn wasn't just filing deeds. She was tracking the actual money trails behind the condemnation orders."

He turned to a page dated November 14, 2016.

Pinned to the page was a carbon copy of a bank transfer receipt showing six-figure payments routed through shell companies registered in Delaware—payments made directly to private accounts held by high-ranking municipal officials, including the former chief of police and the current county land commissioner.

"Ms. Jenkins wasn't just an eccentric recluse who kept a child hidden away on Elmwood Lane," María realized, her voice growing cold with anger. "She was the nominee owner for those shell companies. She held the properties in her name until the state development grants were cleared."

"And Evelyn discovered it," Daniel added, setting the ledger down and looking at the portable tape recorder. "Evelyn was using her position as chief archivist to compile this master file to bring to the federal prosecutors in Capital City. But before she could make the handoff..."

"Jenkins shut her down," María completed the thought. "She brought Evelyn back to Elmwood Lane under the guise of medical care, isolated her from the community, and locked her upstairs."

Daniel reached out and flipped the mechanical play switch on the reel-to-reel recorder.

The small rubber spools turned slowly, their belts squeaking against the cold metal casing. A moment of white static filled the silent basement, followed by the soft, clear voice of a woman speaking quietly into a microphone eight years ago.
