Chapter 27 - THE SUNRISE OVER BROOKLINE

By the time the sleek black SUV pulled up the long, winding cobblestone driveway of the Brookline estate, the dark rain clouds had parted, revealing the first golden rays of a crisp Boston sunrise breaking over the horizon. The sprawling stone mansion stood majestic against the morning sky, surrounded by towering oak trees and pristine manicured gardens.

Inside the front grand hall, the air was warm and smelled faintly of fresh cinnamon and dark roast coffee.

Titan, the giant Mastiff, came bounding down the polished hallway, his massive tail thumping loudly against the doorframe as he greeted them with deep, joyful grunts. Adrian bent down, rubbing the giant dog’s heavy jowls before handing his wet coat to the waiting butler.

From the top of the grand staircase, small footsteps came pitter-pattering down the carpeted steps.

Sophia, wearing her bright pink pajamas decorated with little yellow ducklings, came flying down the stairs, her dark brown curls bouncing around her face.

"Mommy! Daddy!" Sophia cried out, throwing her small arms around Adrian’s leg before leaping into Elena’s waiting embrace. "You were gone all night! Miss Martha said you were fixing the big boats!"

Elena lifted her daughter into her arms, kissing her soft cheek repeatedly while holding her close. "We fixed everything, sweetie," Elena whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "The boats are safe, and so are we."

Adrian walked over, wrapping his broad arms around both of them, burying his face in his daughter’s hair while keeping his hand gently rested on the back of Elena’s waist.

Sophia looked at her parents, her bright hazel eyes searching her father’s face with that same innocent, razor-sharp perception.

"Daddy," Sophia said, giggling softly as she stroked Adrian’s jaw, "are you happy now? You don't look pale anymore."

Adrian let out a deep, chest-rumbling laugh—a sound so full of warmth and freedom that even Titan let out a happy bark.

"I am happier than I have ever been in my life, little one," Adrian said, looking up to lock eyes with Elena. "Because everything I ever fought for is standing right in front of me."
