Chapter 23 - THE ACCIDENT AT PIER 42

"Look out!" Dante yelled, his hand instantly dropping to the holstered firearm beneath his coat as he surged toward the railing.
Below them, chaos erupted across the concrete pier. Dockworkers scattered in all directions as the heavy steel container swayed wildly thirty feet in the air, its support cables snapping one by one with sharp, gunshot-like cracks that echoed off the water.
Adrian didn't hesitate for a single second. With lightning reflexes, he pulled Elena back behind the reinforced steel pillar of the catwalk, wrapping his arms around her to shield her body completely from any flying debris.
BOOM!
The massive container smashed into the corner of the wooden administrative building, ripping through the reinforced roof beams and sending a cloud of pulverized drywall, glass, and splintered timber exploding into the cold morning air. Sirens immediately began blaring across the dock facility as emergency shut-off valves engaged, killing power to the crane unit.
Within seconds, the dust began to clear. The three dock managers had managed to dive clear onto the lower access ramp, sustained only minor cuts, but the structural damage to the primary office was severe.
Adrian released his hold on Elena, his eyes burning with a dangerous, calculated fury as he looked down at the mangled crane rigging hanging limply in the air.
"Dante!" Adrian roared over the sound of the emergency alarms. "Seal the pier gates! Nobody leaves this dock! Check the crane operator's cabin right now!"
"On it!" Dante called out, sprinting down the catwalk stairs with three armed security men close on his heels.
Elena stepped out from behind the steel pillar, her face pale but her hands entirely steady as she looked at the snapped steel cable hanging from the crane boom. She walked directly to the edge of the railing, her sharp legal eye analyzing the mechanical break.
"That wasn't a mechanical failure, Adrian," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, precise register that chilled the air around them. "Look at the tension fracture on the secondary cable. It didn't snap under weight—it was cut halfway through with an industrial torch before the load was lifted."
Adrian walked over to her side, his jaw set like iron as he examined the frayed, scorched metal ends of the thick wire rope.
"They weren't trying to destroy the building," Adrian realized, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "They knew we were scheduled to be in that administrative office ten minutes from now for the harbor commission review."

Elena looked down at her briefcase, her fingers tightening around the leather handle. "Victor Rossi," she whispered softly. "He knew that if both of us were eliminated, the corporate voting trust reverts to the secondary board members—the ones he still controls."
Adrian placed his hand over hers, his touch warm, grounding, and absolute. "He just made the last mistake of his life."
