Chapter 22 - SHADOWS AT THE WATERFRONT

The following morning broke cold and crisp over the Boston docks, where thick grey mist rolled off the Atlantic waters, wrapping around the massive steel shipping containers lined up along Pier 42. While the Brookline estate remained a sanctuary of peace, the economic restructuring of the Moretti family's legitimate shipping empire required constant, watchful vigilance.

Adrian stood on the elevated steel catwalk overlooking the container terminal, his dark navy coat buttoned tight against the icy coastal wind. Alongside him stood Dante Vance, his fiercely loyal lieutenant and head of security, whose sharp eyes scanned the busy docks below where crane operators moved heavy crates bearing the international trade seal.

"The merger with Northern Maritime Logistics went through at midnight, Dom," Dante said, handing over a secure leather binder containing the signed manifest routes. "Elena’s legal structure holds ninety-two percent of the voting shares. The old cartel proxies who tried to siphon off the port revenues have been completely frozen out."

"Have they made any noise?" Adrian asked, his eyes never leaving the dockworkers below.

"Not publicly," Dante replied, his tone darkening. "But our informants in South Boston report that Victor Rossi—the last remaining lieutenant loyal to your uncle's old faction—was seen meeting with an unidentified broker at a warehouse near the harbor three nights ago. They know they can't touch us legally, so they're looking for leverage."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. "They won't find any. The estate is sealed, and Elena’s security detail is doubled every time she leaves the house."

Down on the main concrete deck of the pier, a black luxury sedan pulled up alongside the main office building. Elena stepped out, carrying her sleek leather briefcase, accompanied by two discreet, highly trained bodyguards. Even in the cold wind of the commercial docks, her presence was striking—poised, professional, and entirely unbothered by the rough industrial surroundings.

She climbed the steel stairs to the catwalk, her low heels clicking rhythmically against the metal steps. As she reached the top, Adrian immediately stepped forward, shielding her from the harsh wind with his broad frame.

"You shouldn't be down at the waterfront today, Elena," Adrian said, though his eyes softened the moment he looked at her. "The legal team in downtown could have signed the port clearance certificates."

"The port clearance certificates required my personal corporate seal, Adrian," Elena replied, a subtle smile playing on her lips as she handed him a signed document. "And besides, I wanted to see the ships come in myself. This pier represents eighty percent of the legitimate revenue that funds the Brookline foundation. I don't trust local proxies to oversee the transition."

Dante smiled respectfully, stepping back to give them privacy. "She's right, Boss. The union reps wouldn't even look the old management in the eye until Mrs. Moretti walked into the office."

Before Adrian could answer, a loud, metallic screech echoed across the shipping yard. On the far side of Pier 42, a massive industrial crane lifting a fifty-ton steel shipping container suddenly shuddered. The steel cables strain-groaned under abnormal tension as the container swung violently out of alignment, heading straight toward the roof of the primary logistics office where three senior dock managers were standing.
