Chapter 24 - THE FORENSIC AUDIT

Three hours after the incident at Pier 42, the atmosphere inside the private conference suite of the Boston Financial Tower was dead quiet. The room, lined with dark walnut paneling and overlooking the harbor below, was occupied by six senior corporate attorneys, two forensic engineering experts, and Dante Vance, who stood guard near the locked double doors.

Elena sat at the head of the long glass conference table, her forest-green dress pristine, her long brown hair secured in her signature professional bun. Spread out before her were thick stacks of financial ledgers, maintenance logs, and high-resolution photographs of the severed crane cable taken by their internal forensic team.

Across from her sat Marcus Sterling, a seventy-year-old corporate attorney who had represented the old Moretti family holding companies for over three decades. His hands trembled slightly as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking at the mountain of evidence Elena had assembled in less than one hundred and eighty minutes.

"Mrs. Moretti," Sterling began, his voice strained and hesitant. "The port authority is ruling this an unfortunate industrial accident caused by equipment fatigue. If you pursue an internal criminal investigation, it could freeze the Northern Maritime merger for months, costing the firm tens of millions in delayed freight contracts."

Elena didn't blink. She reached into her folder, sliding a single sheet of paper across the polished glass table directly into Sterling’s space.

"That is the bank routing manifest for Maritime Maintenance Logistics LLC," Elena said, her voice dropping into a calm, icy precision that commanded the total silence of the room. "A shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands six weeks ago. Yesterday afternoon at three o'clock, a wire transfer of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was initiated from that account to the personal checking account of the crane operator on Pier 42."

Sterling’s face turned grey. He looked down at the document, unable to utter a single word of rebuttal.

"And here," Elena continued, sliding a second document forward, "is the beneficial ownership disclosure that I personally unsealed through a federal chancery court petition two hours ago. The ultimate controlling shareholder of Maritime Maintenance Logistics is your nephew, Marcus."

The room went completely still. The other corporate attorneys held their breath, terrified to move or make a sound as Elena Castillo laid bare the entire web of treason.

"You didn't just know about the sabotaged cable, Sterling," Elena whispered, leaning forward, her gaze piercing through the elderly lawyer. "You drew up the indemnification contract that would have transferred the port assets to Victor Rossi’s syndicate the moment Adrian and I were pronounced dead."

Sterling collapsed back into his leather chair, his mouth opening and closing uselessly as tears of absolute defeat welled in his eyes.

At the back of the room, the heavy double doors opened quietly. Adrian Moretti stepped into the suite, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the conference table. He didn't say a word. He simply walked to Elena’s side, resting a heavy hand on the back of her chair, his formidable presence solidifying the absolute end of the old regime.
