Chapter 14 - A Christmas Truce

The Seaport permits were reinstated within forty-eight hours. Conversely, the Rossetti warehouse in Chelsea was condemned and seized by the city a week later, dealing another crippling financial blow to the struggling family. The Rossettis went quiet, though Dante maintained double security around the Brookline house and the Castillos’ movements.

Christmas arrived, bringing a heavy blanket of snow to Boston and blanket of warmth to the Moretti mansion. Adrian had declared a ceasefire for the holidays. He wanted the house to be a sanctuary for Sophia, perhaps the first real Christmas the little girl had ever known.

Elena and Sophia spent the weekend before the holiday decorating the mansion under Mrs. Bellini’s enthusiastic supervision. Sophia insisted that Titan needed to help, which mostly resulted in the giant dog sitting patiently while she hung unbreakable ornaments from his tail and ears.

Christmas Eve was a grand affair. The main hallway was filled with Moretti capos and their families, gathered for the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes. Adrian stood at the head of the table, Titan by his side wearing a festive red bandana. He was charismatic and formidable, a king surrounded by his loyal subjects.

Elena sat near Mrs. Bellini, wearing a forest-green velvet dress. Sophia sat next to Adrian, chattering happily about Santa and showing everyone the new drawing she had made—this one of Titan pulling a sleigh.

As the night wound down, the guests departed, leaving only Adrian, Elena, and the sleeping Sophia in the study. Sophia was curled up in Adrian’s lap, fast asleep, her small hand clutching the drawing. Titan was asleep at their feet. The study was lit only by the soft glow of the fire and the lights from the massive Christmas tree.

Elena sat opposite Adrian, holding a glass of port. The clean, citrus scent of lemon wood cleaner she had used that morning was still faint in the air, mixing with the smell of woodsmoke and pine.

"Thank you, Adrian," Elena said softly. "For all of this."

Adrian looked down at the sleeping child in his arms. The man who ruled Boston through fear and calculation looked entirely at peace.

"She is an extraordinary light in a very dark world, Elena," Adrian replied gently. "You both are. I spent twenty years building an empire, and it took a poison and a five-year-old child to teach me what I was actually protecting."

He looked up at her, his dark eyes reflecting the firelight. For a moment, the barrier between them—class, power, sin—vanished. They were just two people who had found an unlikely home in the wreckage of a storm.
