Chapter 9 - THE VOW IN THE DARK

The woman stepped across the threshold, her soft cleaning shoes quiet against the dark hardwood floor.

The Security Chief pulled the heavy oak door shut from the outside, the brass latch clicking into place with a solid, echoing THUD. The two armed guards took up positions on either side of the entrance, their faces set in hard stone, transformed from ordinary estate security into silent guardians of a deadly secret.

Inside the room, the dim light from the brass reading lamp cast soft shadows across the dark velvet sofa and the rug.

Adrian gently lowered Nora onto the soft cushions of the sofa. The little girl immediately pulled her soft blanket around her shoulders, yawning softly as the late hour finally caught up with her small body.

The woman rushed to the sofa, sinking to her knees on the rug beside Nora, wrapping her arms around the child, pulling her close and kissing her soft brown curls over and over again.

"I'm sorry, baby," she wept softly, her shoulders shaking. "I'm so sorry I let you wander off..."

"It's okay, Mama," Nora mumbled sleepily, her eyes fluttering shut as she snuggled into her mother's lap. "The big man had a warm blanket."

Adrian stood towering over them, his broad, shirtless frame illuminated by the warm glow of the fireplace embers. He held the silver locket in his hand, his thumb resting over the closed latch.

"Who ordered the hit three years ago?" Adrian asked, his voice low, steady, and terrifyingly calm.

The woman raised her head, looking up at him through her tears.

"I don't have a name," she whispered. "I only have a voice from a recorded phone call I found on an encrypted drive before the car exploded. A voice that belongs to someone who sits on your executive board."

Adrian’s jaw set into iron. He didn't ask for the drive yet. He didn't demand the details. He knew that revenge would come in due time, but tonight, the dark room held something far more dangerous than a conspiracy—it held a resurrection.

He reached down, offering his large, tattooed hand to the woman kneeling on the floor.

She looked at his hand—at the dark ink, the scarred knuckles, and the powerful wrist that had built an empire—and slowly reached out her small, red-stained hand, placing her palm into his grip.

Adrian pulled her up gently, bringing her to her feet beside him.

"You're not cleaning stairs anymore," Adrian stated, his voice carrying the quiet, unbreakable authority of a king reclaiming his household. "You stay in this suite. My personal guards will stand outside this door. Tomorrow, we tear down everyone who built this lie."
