Chapter 27 - THE EVENING LIGHT SHIFTS

As five o'clock approached, the harsh brightness of the summer sun softened into a rich, amber glow that turned the surface of Lake Michigan into a shimmering sheet of liquid gold.
Long, violet-hued shadows stretched gracefully across the emerald lawn from the high brick walls, casting cool patches of shade over the wild rose bushes and the stone pathways. The air retained its gentle summer warmth, but the cool breeze coming off the lake began to carry a subtle, refreshing evening crispness.
Elena stood up from the bench, extending her hand to help Nora up from the dry sand.
"Come on, little explorer," Elena said warmly, brushing a few stray grains of sand from Nora’s white sundress. "Let's bring Barnaby up to the terrace so he can have his dinner."
Nora nodded obediently, bending down to gently pat the golden retriever puppy's side. "Wake up, Barnaby! It's time for dinner!"
The puppy scrambled to its feet with an eager wag of its tail, trotting happily alongside Nora as she began to walk up the grassy slope toward the house.

Adrian remained seated on the wooden bench for a brief moment longer, watching his daughter and Elena ascend the green hill together. The quiet beauty of the scene filled him with an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. Everything he had lost, everything he had grieved, and everything he had struggled to understand had led to this exact moment on the shore of Lake Michigan.
He stood up, taking one last look at the wide, peaceful horizon where the sky met the water, before turning to follow his family up toward the main house.
