Chapter 26 - STORIES IN THE SUNLIGHT

Nora sat down on a dry patch of sand near the base of the grassy lawn, pulling her small knees up toward her chest as Barnaby curled up beside her legs, exhausted from his energetic water chase.
"Dad," Nora said, looking up as Adrian and Elena sat down on the wooden bench nearby. "Can you tell me a story about the locket?"
Adrian reached into his dark trousers pocket, withdrawing the small, round silver oval. He held it carefully in his open palm, letting the filigree pattern catch the golden rays of the late afternoon sun.
"What kind of story do you want to hear, Nora?" Adrian asked gently.
"A story about how the blue glass got inside," she said, pointing her small finger at the silver piece. "And how it stays safe next to the picture."
Elena leaned back against the bench, her hand resting over Adrian's broad knee as she listened.
"Well," Adrian began, his voice soft and measured, carrying across the quiet sand. "Once upon a time, there was a tiny piece of glass that got lost in the big lake. It bounced around in the dark waves for a long, long time, thinking it would be lost forever. But the waves were actually taking care of it, making it smooth and shiny. And then, one day, a very brave, very smart little girl with a pale-blue bow walked along the beach and found it."
Nora’s brown eyes lit up with delight as she recognized herself in the tale. "And she gave it to her dad!"

"She gave it to her dad," Adrian agreed, a warm, genuine smile filling his face. "And her dad put it inside a special silver locket, right where it belongs, so it would never, ever be lost again."
Nora clapped her small hands together softly, satisfied with the story, as the tired golden puppy let out a soft sigh and closed its eyes against the warm sand.
