Chapter 10 - THE UNANSWERED ORIGIN

The rain outside the window began to fall harder, drumming a steady, rhythmic beat against the thick glass panes of the third-floor sitting room.
Inside, Nora lay fast asleep on the dark velvet sofa, her small hand tucked beneath her cheek, her pale yellow dress half-covered by her soft pastel blanket. The room was peaceful, filled only with the soft crackle of the dying hearth embers and the quiet breathing of the child.
Adrian stood near the window, looking out into the dark, rain-swept courtyard of his Chicago estate.
His shirtless torso was reflected faintly in the dark glass—the intricate tattoos across his back and shoulders standing out against the black night outside. In his right hand, he held the silver locket, the chain wrapped securely around his fingers.
The woman stood three feet behind him, her black-and-white maid's apron removed and laid quietly over the back of a wooden armchair. She looked at his broad back, her expression a mix of relief, exhaustion, and lingering caution.
"You haven't asked me her real name," the woman said softly into the quiet room.
Adrian didn't turn around right away. He kept his eyes on the rain splashing against the glass.
"Her name is Nora," Adrian said quietly. "She told me."
"That's the name I gave her," the woman replied, her voice dropping into a soft, mysterious tone. "But you didn't ask who she really is to you, Adrian. You didn't ask why her eyes look like yours... or why she wasn't afraid of you when she walked into this room."
Adrian slowly turned around to face her.
The warm firelight caught the dark ink across his chest and the sharp lines of his face. He looked from the pale woman standing in his sitting room down to the little girl sleeping peacefully on his dark velvet sofa.
The photograph inside the silver locket remained closed in his palm—a secret preserved in silver and steel, holding a truth that extended far beyond a simple maid uniform, a fake identity, or a three-year-old murder attempt.
Adrian took a slow breath, stepping closer to the woman who had lived in his shadows for eighteen months.

"Tomorrow," Adrian whispered softly, his dark eyes shining with an absolute, lethal purpose. "Tomorrow, you tell me everything."
The camera remained fixed on the quiet room—on the sleeping child with the soft brown curls, the dark velvet sofa, the gleaming silver locket held tight in Adrian's tattooed hand, and the pale woman standing frozen in the shadows of the Chicago estate, leaving the ultimate truth of Nora's origin and the identity of Adrian's dead wife hidden in the quiet, rain-swept darkness of the night.
