Chapter 8 - THE SHATTERED TRUST

The Security Chief took a sudden step forward, his broad face flushed with anger and embarrassment.

"Boss, give the word," the Security Chief said, his hand reaching for his sidearm. "I'll lock down the estate, pull every board member into the basement, and we won't stop until we find out who breached the perimeter three years ago."

"No," Adrian said sharply, raising his right hand without looking at his chief. "Touch no one. Say nothing to the council. If a single word of this leaves this floor, I will personally throw you into the Chicago River."

"Yes, Boss," the Security Chief bowed his head instantly, stepping back against the wall.

Adrian turned his full attention back to the woman standing before him. The pale, trembling maid who had lived in his shadows for eighteen months.

"The locket," Adrian said, holding up the small silver piece between them. "Why did you give it to her tonight?"

The woman let out a dry, nervous laugh, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't give it to her tonight. She found it hidden inside my mattress in the staff wing while I was folding linens in the laundry room. She took it... and she walked up the stairs because she saw your picture on the wall in the gallery."

Adrian looked at Nora. "You saw my picture?"

Nora nodded happily, her soft brown curls bouncing against his collarbone. "The big painting near the shiny stairs! Mama said you were the man who keeps the house safe."

Adrian’s chest heaved. The icy, unfeeling wall he had built around his heart over three years of solitary grief was crumbling, piece by piece, under the weight of a reality he was only beginning to comprehend. His wife was gone, but the woman standing before him held the key to a truth that could tear his entire syndicate apart.

"Come inside," Adrian said softly, stepping back into the dark sitting room, gesturing toward the dark velvet sofa where Nora’s blanket still lay unfolded.

The woman hesitated at the threshold, her small hands clutching her white apron. She looked at the dark room, at the burning embers in the hearth, and then at Adrian’s bare, tattooed chest.

"Is it safe?" she whispered.

Adrian looked at her, his dark eyes hardening into an absolute, unyielding vow that had once made him the most feared man in the city.

"Nothing in this world will touch you in this room," Adrian swore.
