Chapter 3 - THE SILVER LOCKET OPENS

For a long five seconds, the dark sitting room felt completely devoid of oxygen.
Adrian slowly reached down with his right hand. His fingers, covered in dark tattoos and scarred knuckles, were trembling slightly—a physical weakness he had not displayed in over a decade. He carefully, delicately pinched the thin silver chain between his thumb and forefinger, lifting the small locket off Nora’s pale yellow dress so it caught the full light of the brass lamp.
The silver felt cold against his skin, exactly as he remembered it.
"Where did you get this?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into an intense, quiet register that vibrated with suppressed emotion.
Nora looked down at his large hand holding her chain, her brown eyes completely calm.
"My mama gave it to me," she replied softly.
Adrian’s jaw tightened until the bone showed sharp beneath his skin. He held the locket steady in his left palm, using his right thumb to locate the microscopic release latch hidden along the side seam of the silver frame. He pressed the latch.
With a soft, metallic click, the silver locket opened.
The camera positioning remained strictly behind the open back of the silver locket—showing only the polished, dark metal casing, the curve of Adrian’s fingers, and his face as he looked at the photograph preserved inside.
The photograph itself remained entirely hidden from view.
The moment Adrian’s eyes met the image sealed within the silver frame, every trace of color drained from his face. His skin turned a pale, chalky gray under the dim light. His pupils dilated violently, his nostrils flaring as his breathing turned shallow and ragged.
The hand holding the locket began to shake so hard that the silver chain rattled faintly against his fingernails.
For three years, Adrian Kane had believed a specific set of facts about his life, his loss, and the night his world fell apart. The small piece of paper preserved inside this locket demolished those facts in a single second.
Outside the door, the Security Chief noticed the sudden, heavy silence inside the room. He turned his head slightly, peering through the open oak doorway, his eyes narrowing as he saw his boss—a man feared across the entire Midwest—looking utterly destroyed by a piece of silver jewelry.
Adrian slowly raised his head, his dark, tear-rimmed eyes shifting away from the locket to lock directly onto Nora’s small face. He looked at her features now—not as an uninvited child, but with a sharp, desperate intensity, examining the curve of her jaw, the soft brown curls, and the large brown eyes that were so unnervingly familiar.
"Who is your mother?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of shock, grief, and rising fury.

Nora raised her small arm and pointed her finger straight toward the open doorway leading out into the carpeted hallway.
"Mama cleans the shiny stairs," Nora said clearly.
