Chapter 18 - THE DAUGHTER'S CHOICE

Adrian froze.

The man who had faced down rival syndicates, corrupt federal officials, and a room full of armed mercenaries without a single heartbeat of hesitation now stood entirely paralyzed in the doorway of his own sitting room.

Nora stopped two feet in front of him. She looked up, her large, intelligent hazel eyes scanning his broad frame, taking in the clean charcoal coat, the faint scar along his jaw, and his dark, intense eyes that mirrored her own so perfectly.

"You came back," Nora said, her small voice clear and melodic in the quiet room.

Adrian slowly dropped to one knee, bringing his broad frame down to eye level with the three-year-old child. He removed his remaining leather glove, setting it aside on the floorboards.

"I promised I would," Adrian whispered softly, his voice dropping into a rare, gentle tone that Elena had never heard in eighteen months of service.

Nora reached out her small, pale hand. She touched his scarred jaw, her tiny thumb brushing lightly against his skin before moving down to his collar, where the edge of his black raven tattoo peaked out from beneath his shirt.

"Elena said you are the master of the castle," Nora said, her hazel eyes wide with quiet curiosity. "She said you keep the bad dreams away."

Adrian reached out with trembling, scarred fingers. He gently cupped the back of her head, feeling the soft warmth of her curls beneath his palm.

"I keep everything away, Nora," Adrian said, his dark eyes shining with an absolute, fiercely protective light. "No one will ever hurt you again. No one will ever make you hide."

Elena stood up silently from her armchair, placing her teacup on the table. Tears glistened in her eyes, but she smiled—a pure, unburdened smile of absolute relief.

"She needs a real room, Adrian," Elena said softly, walking over to stand beside them. "She can't stay in the third-floor servant quarters anymore."

Adrian stood up slowly, lifting Nora effortlessly into his broad left arm. The little girl wrapped her small arms naturally around his neck, resting her head against his shoulder as if she had belonged there her entire life.

"The entire east wing belongs to her," Adrian declared, looking down at his daughter. "We start renovations tomorrow. Nursery, playrooms, private gardens... everything Claire wanted for her."

He looked at Elena, his expression turning sincere and deeply respectful.

"And you, Elena," Adrian said, "you are no longer a maid in this house. You are Nora's legal guardian alongside me. You have a permanent home here for as long as you live."

Elena covered her mouth with her hands, bowing her head as tears spilled onto her sweater. "Thank you, Adrian. Thank you."

Nora pulled her head back from Adrian's shoulder, reaching into her small yellow dress pocket. She pulled out a small, round object and held it out in her open palm.

It was the photograph that had been inside the silver locket—the picture of her mother, Claire.

"Is this my mother?" Nora asked softly, looking into Adrian's eyes.

Adrian looked down at the photograph, then back into his daughter's face, seeing the exact same light, the exact same grace, and the exact same unbreakable spirit living within her small eyes.

"Yes, Nora," Adrian whispered, his heart feeling whole for the first time in three long years. "That is your mother. And she loved you more than the sky."
