Chapter 4 - THE SEARCH IN THE HALLWAY

The Security Chief, standing just outside the doorway, heard the girl's words with absolute clarity.

His scarred eyebrow shot up. The "shiny stairs" referred to the grand marble staircase that swept up from the main foyer to the second and third floors—a central feature of the Kane estate. Cleaning staff for the upper levels were subjected to brutal, multi-layered background checks handled directly by his personal security detail.

The Security Chief took an immediate step into the room, his eyes shifting from the child to the trembling silver locket in Adrian’s hand. He recognized the look on Adrian’s face—it was the face of a man who had just seen a ghost.

"Boss?" the Security Chief asked, his voice low and sharp with immediate tactical awareness.

Adrian didn't answer with words. He closed the silver locket with a sharp snap, keeping the chain secured in his palm. He reached down, wrapped his massive, tattooed arms around Nora’s waist, and lifted her off the dark velvet sofa into his chest.

The four-year-old girl wrapped her arms around his bare, tattooed neck, resting her head against his shoulder without a single complaint.

Adrian stood up to his full height of six-foot-two. His massive muscular frame, covered in dark ink, towered in the center of the dark sitting room. His cold eyes burned into the Security Chief’s face.

"Find her," Adrian commanded. The two words were delivered with a quiet, terrifying force that vibrated through the floorboards. "Now."

The Security Chief didn't ask questions. He didn't ask for a name, a description, or an explanation. He turned instantly on his heel, pulling a sleek black radio from his belt as he stepped out into the hallway.

"All teams, secure the perimeter," the Security Chief barked into the radio, his heavy boots moving fast across the carpeted hallway. "Block all exits on the east wing. I want every staff member on the second and third floor accounted for immediately."

Two armed guards in black suits instantly moved down the corridor, their polished shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood edges as they fanned out toward the service elevators and the grand marble staircase.

Adrian walked to the threshold of his room, holding Nora securely against his chest. His right hand remained clamped tightly around the silver locket hanging from her neck. He stood in the doorway, his eyes scanning the long, dimly lit hallway that stretched into the darkness of the estate's upper wing.

The air in the hallway was thick with tension. The radio chatter from the Security Chief echoed faintly from down the hall—sharp, urgent commands bouncing off the high ceilings and oil paintings.

Thirty seconds passed in total, agonizing silence.

Then, the heavy sound of fast footsteps returned from the far end of the corridor.

The Security Chief walked back toward Adrian’s doorway alone. His face was dark, his jaw clenched, his broad forehead slick with a light sheen of sweat. He stopped three feet from Adrian, lowering his radio to his side.

"She ran," the Security Chief reported quietly, his voice tight with failure. "The back service door near the marble stairs was left unlocked. Her uniform apron was dropped on the landing."
