Chapter 20 - THE SANCTUARY BY THE LAKE

Two years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the private private estate on the shores of Lake Michigan, north of Chicago. The wide, emerald-green lawns stretched all the way down to a private white sand beach, where gentle, blue waves lapped against the shore.
Sitting on a wooden bench near the water's edge was Elena, reading a book under the shade of a white canvas umbrella, watching the wide, peaceful horizon.
Down near the water, five-year-old Nora ran along the damp sand, wearing a simple white sundress, her brown hair tied back in a neat ponytail. She was laughing joyfully, chasing a small golden retriever puppy that bounced through the shallow water, splashing clear drops into the warm air.
Walking two steps behind her was Adrian.
At thirty-four, he looked powerful, healthy, and deeply at peace. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his dark ink, and dark trousers. The cold, violent edge that had once defined his every movement was gone, replaced by a quiet, grounded strength that radiated from his broad frame.
Nora stopped near a pile of smooth gray lake stones, bending down to pick up a bright, polished piece of blue glass smoothed by the waves.
"Look, Dad!" Nora called out, turning around and running back to him, holding the glass up to the sunlight. "It looks like the ocean!"
Adrian dropped to one knee on the warm sand, taking the small piece of glass from her palm. He held it up to the light, smiling as the blue reflection danced across her pale cheeks.
"It's beautiful, Nora," Adrian said softly.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the silver locket. He opened the clasp, placing the small piece of blue lake glass inside the secondary compartment opposite Claire's photograph, before closing the silver lid with a soft, satisfying click.
Nora looked at the silver locket held between his broad fingers. "Is my mother happy up there?" she asked, pointing a small finger toward the clear blue sky above the lake.
Adrian looked up at the sky, feeling the warm summer breeze carrying the scent of fresh water and blooming wild roses from the estate garden.
He wrapped his arm around his daughter, pulling her close against his side as they stood together on the warm shore, watching the quiet waves roll in from the vast expanse of Lake Michigan.

"She is very happy, Nora," Adrian whispered softly, his voice echoing with an absolute, unshakable peace. "Because she knows her little girl is safe, loved, and finally home."
The camera slowly pulled back—moving across the warm sand, past the running golden puppy, past the white canvas umbrella near the lawn, and up over the high brick walls of the Chicago sanctuary, leaving the story of Adrian, Nora, and the silver locket sealed in the brilliant, sunlit tranquility of the quiet summer day.
