Chapter 28 - THE THRESHOLD OF HOME

The main residence of the Kane estate was an architectural masterpiece of warm stone, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and grand timber beams that blended seamlessly with the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
As Adrian, Elena, and Nora reached the broad stone terrace, the floor-to-ceiling glass doors slid open smoothly on their silent tracks. Inside, the grand living space was bathed in the warm, inviting light of the late afternoon, filled with comfortable furniture, soft rugs, and fresh floral arrangements picked from the garden.
There were no locked, forbidden doors in this house anymore.
The dark, heavy oak door that had once sealed away Adrian's private quarters in his previous mansion was a distant memory. Here, every room was open, filled with natural sunlight, air, and the joyful sounds of a thriving family life. Framed photographs sat proudly on side tables and mantelpieces—no longer turned facedown in grief, but displayed openly, showing bright smiles from family trips, beach days, and quiet mornings at home.
Nora ran inside, her patent-leather sandals clicking softly against the polished hardwood floors as she led Barnaby toward his food bowl near the kitchen island.
Elena turned at the doorway, looking back at Adrian as he stepped onto the stone terrace. She reached up, her thumb gently wiping a stray grain of sand from his cheekbone.

"You look completely at home, Adrian," she said softly, her brown eyes filled with deep affection.
Adrian placed his broad hand over hers, holding it against his face for a long, quiet moment. "That's because I am," he replied quietly.
