Chapter 35 - Bloodline of Ashes

Dawn arrived not with sunlight, but with a pale, bruised gray that seeped through the shattered stained-glass clerestories of the chapel above.

I awoke with a start, my neck stiff from sleeping upright against the sarcophagus. The fire had burned down to glowing embers, filling the crypt with a pleasant, dry warmth. Beside me, Luca was awake.

He was propped against the stone wall, his face still pale, but the fever had broken. His eyes were clear, focused, and intensely dark as he watched me. In his lap rested an automatic pistol Leo had left beside him, his thumb resting lightly on the safety catch.

"You slept two hours," he said quietly, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated in the small chamber.

I rubbed my tired eyes, sitting up and immediately checking his bandages. They were dry, without fresh seepage. "You shouldn't be moving your arm."

"The pain keeps me awake," he replied. He reached out with his uninjured hand, gently catching a strand of tangled, salt-stiff hair that had fallen across my face, tucking it behind my ear with surprising gentleness. His fingers lingered against the curve of my jaw, his thumb brushing over my skin with a tender reverence that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "You saved my life twice in twenty-four hours, Elena. No one has ever done that. Not even my father."

"Your father wasn't very good at choosing his allies, apparently," I retorted softly, leaning slightly into his touch despite myself. "Why did Matteo do this, Luca? You told me he was like a brother to you."

Luca’s expression darkened, the warmth vanishing behind an iron mask of ruthless calculation. "Matteo believes the old ways are dead. He thinks my hesitation to expand into trafficking and narcotics was weakness. When Enzo approached him with backing from the Calabrian syndicates, Matteo saw an opportunity to replace me without fighting a protracted war."

"He said you burned your empire for a servant girl," I whispered, the words haunting me from the radio broadcast.

Luca’s gaze locked onto mine, intense and unyielding. "He was wrong. I did not burn it for a servant girl. I burned it because the empire was rotten to its core, and you made me realize that I would rather see every stone turned to ash than let them touch a single hair on your head."

The breath caught in my throat. The air between us grew thick and electric, charged with an intensity that made the surrounding cold stones fade into nothingness. He leaned forward slightly, his gaze dropping to my lips, the unspoken memory of that innocent kiss in his private chamber—the kiss that had unleashed all this chaos—hanging between us like a drawn blade.

Before he could speak another word, the sound of scrambling boots echoed from the upper chapel stairs.

Leo burst into the crypt, his chest heaving, clutching an assault rifle to his chest. His face was white as a sheet.

"They're here," Leo hissed, keeping his voice to a terrified whisper. "A black helicopter just landed on the plateau above the cove. Armed teams are sweeping the shoreline. They found the boat."
