Chapter 29 - THE SANGUINE PLEDGE

The standoff hung on a razor’s edge. A single breath would decide who lived and who died.

Elena saw the subtle shift in Luca’s posture—the slight tension in his left leg, the micro-movement of his fingers against the grip of his weapon. He was waiting for a distraction, a split second of diverted attention.

Without warning, Elena hurled the heavy tactical flashlight she held in her left hand directly at the chandelier hanging suspended above Enzo's head.

The metal flashlight struck the delicate crystal with a resounding crash. Hundreds of heavy glass prisms and iron links snapped under the impact, raining down in a glittering, deadly shower directly onto Enzo and his guards.

"Look out!" one of the mercenaries yelled, instinctively raising his arms to shield his face.

In that fraction of a second, Luca moved.

He didn't fire at Enzo. He fired two lightning-fast shots at the two flanking bodyguards, dropping them instantly before they could bring their rifles to bear.

At the same time, Leo violently threw his head backward, smashing his skull directly into Enzo’s broken nose. Enzo howled in agony, his grip slipping as his gun fired wildly into the marble ceiling.

Leo rolled frantically across the slick floor toward Elena. "Leo!" she cried out, dropping to her knees and pulling her brother behind the shelter of a overturned mahogany table, wrapping her arms protectively around his trembling shoulders.

Enzo stumbled backward against the fountain, blood pouring from his shattered nose. He scrambled to retrieve his dropped weapon, his eyes wild with feral rage. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you all!"

Before his fingers could touch the grip, a heavy, polished leather boot slammed down on Enzo's hand, crushing the bones against the stone floor.

Enzo shrieked in agony.

Luca stood over him like the angel of death. His face was bathed in the flickering orange glow of the distant fires, his dark eyes void of mercy. He raised his Beretta, pressing the cold muzzle directly between Enzo’s eyes.

"Don Rossi... wait... please..." Enzo gasped, his bravado instantly evaporating into pathetic whimpering. "We can make a deal... I have offshore accounts... millions..."

"You threatened her," Luca whispered, the words carrying the absolute weight of a death sentence.

*Bang.*

The shot echoed through the great hall, ending the life of Enzo Moretti.

Silence fell over the ruins of the Rossi mansion, broken only by the distant crackle of flames and the heavy, ragged sound of Luca’s breathing. He stood there for a long moment, the gun lowering to his side, his body swaying dangerously as the final reserves of adrenaline fled his veins.
