Chapter 12 - SHADOWS OF THE SYNDICATE

By midday, the quiet domestic tension inside the master suite had dissolved into the grim realities of the Rossi criminal empire.

Elena was organizing the private library adjoining Luca’s study when heavy footsteps resonated through the ground-floor gallery. Looking down from the curved mezzanine, she saw Marcus escorting four men in bespoke dark suits into the lower reception room. Unlike the polished elegance of the estate staff, these men carried an aura of raw violence; their jaws were set, their coats tailored broad enough to conceal heavy sidearms.

"The docks in Newark are secured, Don Rossi," one of the men—a lieutenant with a jagged scar across his eyebrow—reported as Luca walked into the room below.

Luca had changed into a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his injured arm resting naturally inside his unbuttoned jacket. The warmth Elena had glimpsed that morning was entirely extinguished. In its place stood a ruthless kingpin, his posture radiates absolute, terrifying authority.

"Secured isn't enough, Vincent," Luca said, his voice quiet, devoid of anger, yet far more terrifying for its calm. "I asked for the manifests. Why were two containers flagged by the port authority?"

"A customs clerk got ambitious," Vincent muttered, staring at the floor. "We offered to double his payout. He hesitated."

Luca stopped two paces from Vincent. The room fell into dead silence. Elena held her breath behind the marble balustrade above, watching the man who had bought her freedom with a single stroke of a pen.

"Hesitation means he’s talking to someone else," Luca said softly. "Cut his access. If he took money from the Falcone family, make sure he never speaks into a telephone again."

"Understood, Boss."

"Leave. Marcus, bring me the logistics file."

As the men turned and filed out with hurried deference, Luca suddenly raised his head. His dark eyes locked precisely onto the spot where Elena stood behind the shadows of the mezzanine railing. He hadn't turned his neck or heard her move, yet he had known she was there the entire time.

Instead of scolding her for eavesdropping, he raised two fingers in a silent gesture, beckoning her down to the study.
