Chapter 32 - Into the Devil's Teeth

The roar of the breakers against the cliffs sounded like endless artillery fire. Spray erupted twenty feet into the air, drenching the deck in freezing foam that stung my raw skin like needles. Between the towering pillars of granite, narrow gaps of black water offered the only passage—passages so treacherous that local fishermen avoided them even under the noon sun.

"Leo, cut the running lights!" I cried out, crawling forward on my knees across the slick floorboards to reach the instrument panel.

"Way ahead of you, sis!" Leo snapped the primary toggles down, plunging our boat into near-complete darkness. Only the dim, crimson luminescence of the GPS and engine temperature gauges illuminated his sweat-sheened face.

Behind us, the pursuing interceptor surged forward, its roaring diesel engines echoing off the cavernous rock walls. Without our running lights, their searchlight swung frantically across the surging surf, slicing through sea spray and catching the sharp edges of the granite reefs.

"They're blind," Luca murmured, his voice growing dangerously raspier. He leaned heavily against my shoulder, his breathing shallow and rattling. When I reached beneath his jacket to press against his chest, my fingers sank into hot, sticky gore. The makeshift pressure dressing had completely soaked through; dark venous blood was seeping through his tactical vest in a steady, lethal river.

"Luca, you have to sit down," I pleaded, terror constricting my throat. "You're losing too much blood. Please."

"Not yet," he whispered, though his heavy frame was trembling with a deep, systemic chill. He looked down at me through the shadows, his dark eyes shadowed by pain, yet possessing an intensity that made the surrounding storm vanish for a fleeting heartbeat. "Matteo knows every safehouse, Elena. He knows my bank accounts, my captains, my codes. But he doesn't know the water. He was always a creature of the city."

A sharp ping sounded against our stern. The enemy boat had spotted our engine wake. Tracers lit up the darkness, snapping through the air around our heads like angry hornets. One round punched straight through the fiberglass fairing six inches above Leo’s shoulder, showering us in plastic dust.

"Leo, aim between the two needle rocks ahead!" Luca ordered, pointing with a blood-streaked finger toward a terrifyingly narrow channel where the surf crashed violently against submerged shelves. "There is a subterranean fissure. The current pulls outward, but the channel is deep enough if you ride the crest!"

"If I miss the line by two feet, we'll be chopped into kindling!" Leo shouted back, but his hands were steady on the wheel. He had spent his childhood racing rusted skiffs along the coast; instinct took over where sight failed.

"Then do not miss," Luca replied with grim certainty.

Leo slammed the throttles fully open. The boat surged forward, lifted by a massive swell that swept us directly toward the granite gap. For a terrifying second, the jagged rock wall loomed mere inches from our starboard side, so close I could smell the ancient moss and crushed barnacles.

Behind us, the enemy captain took the bait. Determined not to lose us in the labyrinth, the black patrol craft accelerated to match our speed, entering the narrow chasm right behind us.

"Brace!" Leo roared.

Our boat slipped through the needle's eye, the keel scraping against the hidden rock bed with a hideous vibration that shook our bones, but the swell carried us through into the deeper water of a hidden sea cavern on the other side.

The pursuers were not so fortunate.

A sickening crunch echoed through the gorge, followed immediately by the apocalyptic sound of fiberglass ripping apart and twin engines exploding as their boat struck the submerged granite reef at forty knots. The blast lit up the jagged cliffs in a momentary, violent flash of orange and red, throwing burning debris across the churning black sea.

Silence fell, broken only by the steady thrum of our idling engine and the heavy, ragged sound of Luca collapsing onto the deck.
