Chapter 30 - THE BURNING HORIZON

The great hall was collapsing into ash. Structural timbers above groaned under the weight of the raging fire, sending showers of glowing sparks cascading down into the foyer.

"Luca!" Elena ran to him, catching him just as his knees gave way.

She took his full weight, her arms straining as she helped him lower gently onto the steps of the fountain. Leo rushed over, bruised and shaken, but alive, grabbing Luca's other arm to support him.

"We have to get out of here," Leo shouted over the roar of the blaze. "The whole east wing is engulfed! It's going to collapse!"

Luca coughed weakly, his head lolling against Elena’s shoulder. His skin was deathly cold now, the bleeding from his back having restarted during the violent firefight. "The garage... underground tunnel leads to the private docks... boat is fueled..."

"Can you walk?" Elena asked, cupping his face with both hands, forcing him to meet her gaze.

Luca looked at her, a faint, weary smile touching his bloodied lips. "With you... I can walk to hell and back."

Together, Elena and Leo supported Luca, dragging him through the service corridors away from the inferno. They reached the subterranean boat slip beneath the cliffs of the estate, where a high-powered black offshore speedboat bobbed gently in the dark waters of the Mediterranean.

Leo jumped aboard, frantically working the ignition controls, while Elena helped Luca into the passenger seat, wrapping a heavy maritime jacket around his shivering shoulders.

The twin engines roared to life with a deep, throaty rumble.

As Leo steered the vessel out of the cavern and into the open, stormy sea, Elena stood on the stern, looking back at the Rossi estate. The magnificent palace that had been her prison and her sanctuary was now a towering beacon of fire against the black night sky, flames licking the stormy clouds.

Suddenly, a radio transceiver mounted on the boat's console crackled to life with an encrypted frequency chime.

A voice, smooth, cold, and intimately familiar, echoed through the speaker. It wasn't Enzo. It wasn't any of the Falcone remnants.

It was Matteo, Luca’s most trusted underboss and lifelong confidant.

"Don Rossi," the voice came through with chilling, calculated calm. "If you are hearing this, it means Enzo failed to finish the job. A pity. He was always too clumsy for delicate work."

Luca’s eyes snapped open, his jaw tightening in horror. "Matteo..." he rasped.

"Do not bother trying to reach the safehouse in Naples, Luca," the traitor continued, the sound of waves and distant thunder humming behind his words. "My men are already waiting at the rendezvous point. You burned your empire for a servant girl. Now, watch what remains of your bloodline drown with it."

The radio went dead.

Out in the stormy darkness ahead, two pairs of high-beam searchlights suddenly flared to life from the black water, locking directly onto their speeding boat. The sound of heavy caliber machine guns charging cut through the roar of the incoming storm.

Elena grabbed the wheel beside her brother, her heart pounding in terror, as Luca struggled to lift his weapon once more, the tempest closing in from every side.
