Chapter 1 - THE COLD FIREPLACE IN THE PRIVATE CHAMBER

The soft, golden hue of early morning light filtered through the tall, arched windows of Luca Rossi’s private bedroom suite, casting long, elegant shadows across dark hardwood floors and hand-knotted silk rugs. The room was expansive, designed with the quiet, imposing luxury of a historic New York mansion. Deep mahogany paneling lined the walls, framed by subtle gold leafing, while high ceilings supported a subdued crystal chandelier that remained unlit. Despite the opulent surroundings, an unnatural, biting chill lingered in the air, drifting inward from the unlit, cavernous stone fireplace set into the central wall.

Elena stepped through the heavy double doors into the master bedroom, her movements quiet and deliberate. At mid-twenties, she was a newly hired household assistant, burdened by mounting personal debts that forced her into taking employment at the notorious Rossi estate. She wore a fitted light-blue-and-white maid uniform, complete with a crisp, neatly tied white apron. Her long brown hair was gathered loosely at the back, leaving a few soft strands to frame a face that carried a look of tired resilience. She carried a polished silver breakfast tray loaded with fresh scrambled eggs, golden toast, and a steaming porcelain cup of black coffee.

Sitting near the edge of a massive, dark velvet upholstered bed was Luca Rossi. At early thirties, Luca was the universally feared head of the Rossi organization, currently recovering privately from a secret, high-stakes medical procedure. He sat completely shirtless, clad only in tailored, fitted black trousers. His broad, deeply athletic torso was covered in dark, detailed tattoo work that wound up his neck and down his left arm. Across his upper right chest and shoulder, a thick, clean white medical bandage was wrapped tightly, covering a healing injury.

Elena walked across the expansive floor, her eyes instantly registering the shivering chill of the suite. She looked at the dark, cold hearth where unlit logs sat untouched.

"Fire hasn’t been lit?" Elena asked, her voice calm and practical, free of the trembling hesitation typical of the mansion's other staff.

Luca did not immediately turn his head. He sat perfectly upright, his dark wavy hair slightly tousled, trimmed stubble framing his sharp, chiseled jaw. His dark eyes remained fixed on the rain-streaked windowpane across the room before shifting slowly toward her.

"Four days," Luca replied, his voice a low, rough rasp that carried an absolute, flat authority.

Without a second thought, Elena set the silver tray onto a carved side table. She walked straight to the cold hearth, knelt gracefully on the stone rug, and reached for the iron match striker. She struck a flame against the kindling, carefully fanning the spark until yellow light caught the dry oak logs. Warmth began to spread softly across the hearth, illuminating the sharp, dark contours of Luca’s face as he sat silently on the edge of his bed, watching her every move with unblinking, analytical intensity.
