Chapter 50 - The Leviathan's Gambit

Damon and Julian snapped their heads upward.

Standing thirty feet above them on the central observation bridge was Valeria Vance. The rain swirled around her like a dark cape, but she looked as poised and immaculate as if she were standing in a Pentagon briefing room.

Beside her stood four elite operators clad in heavy experimental exoskeleton armor—hydraulic servomotors whining quietly as their mechanical joints compensated for the heavy machine guns mounted to their chest rigs.

And in Valeria’s left hand was a remote detonator with an illuminated digital display flashing red: **ARMED — 00:03:00.**

"Remarkable, Damon," Valeria said, her voice amplified through the plant's backup PA system. "Truly remarkable. You dismantled my best assault team with a pipe wrench and an amateur kickboxer. Mercer was an idiot, but you... you are still the finest instrument the Department ever forged."

Damon raised his HK416, his crosshairs locking onto Valeria's forehead. "Step away from the detonator, Valeria. You lost the reservoir. The canisters are secure."

Valeria didn't flinch at the rifle pointed at her face. Instead, she laughed—a cold, crystalline sound that sent a chill through the damp mountain air.

"Did you really believe the water was the primary objective, Ghost-Six?" she asked, tilting her head with genuine amusement. "I told you at the lake: Mercer was your bait. But this entire facility? This was *my* bait."

Julian looked at Damon, panic creeping back into his voice. "Damon... what is she talking about?"

"Look at the timer, Damon," Valeria pointed down at the detonator. "Two minutes and forty seconds. Do you know what those charges are attached to?"

Damon’s eyes widened slightly as the pieces snapped together in his mind with horrifying clarity.

"The Clearwater Hydroelectric Dam," Damon breathed. "The upper floodgates."

"Precisely," Valeria smiled. "The water plant was just a distraction to pull you into the bottom of this valley. Three miles upriver, thirty million gallons of mountain water are held back by an eight-foot concrete spillway. When that timer hits zero, the charges blow the intake conduits. A forty-foot wall of water will sweep down this gorge at sixty miles per hour."

She raised her hand toward the town of Pine Ridge sleeping peacefully in the valley below.

"It won't just wash away this plant, Damon. It will scour Pine Ridge from the face of the earth. Every home. Every shop. The school. Your little workshop. Erased. And the world will record it as a tragic infrastructure failure caused by an unseasonal storm."

"You're insane," Julian shouted up at her, stepping forward with his fists clenched. "There are thousands of innocent people down there!"

"Innocence is a luxury of stable borders, Mr. Ross," Valeria replied dismissively. "To the market, Pine Ridge is simply an insurance payout and a clean slate."

She looked back down at Damon, her smile fading into a chilling, absolute challenge.

"You have two minutes and twenty seconds, Ghost-Six. The main control terminal to disarm the dam's demolition charges is at the dam crest—three miles up the ridge road. But to get there, you have to cross this bridge. And to cross this bridge..."

The four exoskeleton-clad operators stepped forward in unison, their heavy miniguns spinning up with a deafening, high-pitched electric whine that shook the metal catwalk.

"...you have to go through me."

The digital timer on Valeria’s detonator ticked down: **00:02:15... 00:02:14...**

May you like

Damon tightened his grip on his rifle, his boots digging into the flooded concrete apron. Beside him, Julian dropped into a fighter's stance, blood dripping from his knuckles onto the wet stone, ready to die.

Above them, the miniguns roared to life, unleashing a wall of incandescent tracer fire directly down into the basin—and the dark water of the river began to churn with a terrifying, subterranean rumble from the mountains above.
