Chapter 48 - The Forgotten Veins

Two miles into the foothills of Blackwood Ridge lay the abandoned entrance of the Old Colfax Coal Mine—a vast, subterranean labyrinth that had been closed since the collapse of 1974. The county had sealed the primary drift entrance with six inches of reinforced concrete and posted danger signs every fifty yards.
To the outside world, it was an unstable graveyard of methane and rotten timbers.
To Damon, it was safehouse Delta.
Using a crowbar he retrieved from a concealed cache hidden beneath a culvert near the rail spur, Damon pried back the rusted steel plate covering an old ventilation shaft. He dropped into the cool, mineral-smelling darkness below, Julian tumbling in right behind him.
Damon pulled the steel plate back into position, securing it with a heavy wire tie.
He clicked on a small, red-lens tactical penlight. The crimson beam illuminated a dry, vaulted tunnel cut straight through solid limestone. Unlike the damp, rotting timber of the upper levels, this section of the mine was bone dry, reinforced with modern steel arch supports.
"Follow my footsteps," Damon commanded. "Don't touch the floorboards near the edges. Tripwires are calibrated to thirty pounds."
Julian froze, his foot hovering an inch above the ground. He carefully retracted it and placed it directly into Damon's muddy boot print. "You booby-trapped an abandoned coal mine?"
"I prepared a fallback position," Damon corrected. "Hope is not a tactical plan."
They walked in silence for ten minutes, descending deeper into the mountain until the ambient temperature dropped to a steady fifty-five degrees. The tunnel opened into a cavernous chamber that had been converted into an austere, highly functional forward operating base.
Along the stone wall sat three heavy military footlockers, a folding tactical desk equipped with two hardened Panasonic Toughbook laptops, a solar-charged battery bank hooked to deep geothermal grounding rods, and a wall rack containing weapons that made Julian's eyes widen in sheer disbelief.
Precision rifles, suppressed submachine guns, tactical vests, medical trauma kits, and crates of military rations.
"You're not a plumber who used to be a soldier," Julian murmured, staring at the subterranean arsenal. "You're a one-man army waiting for the end of the world."
"I was waiting for this day," Damon said flatly.
He walked directly to the desk, plugged the encrypted micro-drive into the Toughbook, and sat down. His fingers flew across the keyboard with blinding speed, bypassing commercial firewalls and executing a decryption script written in raw assembly code.
The screen flickered. Lines of green data streamed down the terminal.
Julian walked over, leaning over Damon's shoulder. "Can you crack it?"
"It's already cracking," Damon said. "Mercer's encryption was complex, but Valeria's architecture has a signature. She always uses a 4096-bit rotating cipher based on the Fibonacci sequence of prime coordinates."
On screen, a progress bar reached 100%.
**ACCESS GRANTED — PROJECT LEVIATHAN: PHASE TWO.**
A tactical map of the tri-county area bloomed on the display. Across the screen, five critical infrastructure nodes were highlighted in pulsing red: the Clearwater Hydroelectric Dam, the Pine Ridge Regional Power Substation, the County Water Purification Facility, the fiber-optic switching hub, and the local National Guard armory.
Julian gasped. "What are they going to do? Blow up the dam?"
Damon leaned closer, his eyes narrowing as he read the operational orders.
"No," Damon said, his blood running cold. "They aren't going to blow it up. They're going to shut down the water purification facility and introduce a synthetic neurotoxin into the municipal reservoir. Then, when the town begins to panic, Blackthorn PMC will roll in under a state of emergency contract signed by the governor's office."
"They're poisoning the town to stage an occupation?" Julian’s voice rose in panic. "My family is in that town! My sister lives on Oak Street!"
"They don't care about the town, Julian," Damon said, turning to look at the young man with absolute gravity. "Pine Ridge is a demonstration. Valeria is selling a service to foreign buyers and corporate oligarchs. She wants to show that her private army can completely paralyze a modern American municipality and restore 'order' within forty-eight hours without federal intervention."
"We have to stop them," Julian said, his fear suddenly giving way to a desperate, furious resolve. "We have to call someone—the FBI, the state police—"
"The FBI field office in Charlotte has three of Valeria's assets on the payroll," Damon cut him off mercilessly. "If you call them, they will give your coordinates to Blackthorn before you hang up the phone."
Damon stood up from the chair. He stripped off his soaked, torn civilian clothes, revealing a torso mapped with jagged scars from shrapnel, knife wounds, and high-velocity rifle rounds. He opened the first footlocker and pulled out a clean, black tactical uniform made of fire-retardant Nomex.
"There is no one coming to save Pine Ridge, Julian," Damon said as he pulled on the combat trousers and laced up high-traction assault boots. "The police won't save it. The government won't save it."
He strapped on a modular chest rig, slotting loaded 5.56mm magazines into the pouches, followed by a suppressed HK416 assault rifle that clicked into battery with lethal precision.
He picked up his ten-inch forged steel plumber’s wrench from the desk, sliding it into the heavy utility loop on his tactical belt right alongside his combat knife.
"Then who will?" Julian asked, his voice shaking.
Damon racked the bolt of the HK416, his eyes blazing in the dim red light of the cavern.
May you like
"The plumber."
