Chapter 16 - MORNING LESSONS

The morning sun broke over the pine trees, painting the backyard in crisp shades of amber and pale green. Morning dew clung to the grass blades, glistening like tiny diamonds in the early light. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of pine needles and damp earth.
In the middle of the lawn, barefoot on the damp grass, stood eight-year-old Evan.
He was dressed in grey sweatpants and a blue hoodie, his small frame rigid as he attempted to hold a balanced defensive stance. His feet were set shoulder-width apart, his knees slightly bent, his hands raised near his chest with his elbows tucked in.
Three feet away stood Damon.
Damon wore his standard weekend attire—faded jeans, a dark thermal shirt, and his heavy work boots. He moved around his son in a slow, deliberate circle, his hands behind his back.
"Keep your shoulders down, Evan," Damon said gently, his voice calm in the quiet morning air. "Tension is your enemy. When you tighten your neck, you freeze your vision. Breathe through your nose."
Evan exhaled slowly, letting his shoulders drop half an inch. "Like this, Dad?"
"Better," Damon replied, stopping in front of him. "Now, why do we keep our hands up?"
"To protect our chin," Evan answered quickly.
"No," Damon corrected softly, taking a step forward and extending his index finger until it lightly touched Evan’s forehead. "We keep our hands up to create a fence. Your hands are the first warning sign. When someone steps inside your personal space, your hands say, 'Stop.' They give you time to make a choice."
Damon stepped back, folding his arms across his chest. "Now, I want you to step toward me and say 'Stop' with confidence. Don't shout. Don't show anger. Just set your boundary."
Evan took a step forward, raising his hands palms-out. "Stop."
Damon shook his head gently. "You're asking for permission, buddy. You're waiting to see if I'll obey. Don't ask. State it. Your body language must match your words. Try again."
Evan reset his feet, took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, and stepped forward with intention. His posture locked, his eyes focused entirely on his father’s chest.
"Stop," Evan said, his voice firm, clear, and unyielding.

A proud, warm smile broke across Damon’s face. "There it is. That's your power. The ability to control your own space without ever throwing a punch."
From the kitchen window, Sarah stood holding a steaming ceramic mug of coffee, watching the two of them through the glass. She saw the gentle, patient manner in which her husband instructed their son—a man capable of terrifying violence using the softest touch to build confidence in a little boy. A tear formed at the corner of her eye, a mixture of profound relief and deep love.
