Chapter 13 - SECRETS AMONG LILY PADS

Damon unbuttoned his coat, hanging it carefully on the wooden peg near the door. He didn't avoid his wife's gaze. Instead, he placed his large, warm hands on her waist, pulling her close and leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead.

"Nothing we can't handle, Sarah," Damon murmured gently. "Just a couple of loud fathers testing the waters. I kept it quiet."

Sarah let out a slow, breathy exhale, resting her cheek against his chest. She knew snippets of Damon’s past—she knew he had served in ultra-classified special operations units, that he possessed skills registered in no public database, and that his honorable discharge papers carried red clearance stamps that forbade any further inquiry. She had met him when he was a broken, silent man rebuilding his life in a small mountain town, long before they bought this house and brought Evan into the world.

"Did you... have to use it?" she asked softly, her fingers tightening on his shirt.

"No," Damon lied smoothly, though it was a protective lie born of love. "I just stood my ground. The gym owner recognized me from my old military days and stepped in before anything started. It’s fine."

Sarah pulled back, looking into his calm, dark eyes. "I just want us to stay safe, Damon. We worked so hard for this life. The quiet house, the garden, Evan’s school... I don't want the shadows coming back."

"They won't," Damon promised, his voice carrying the immovable strength of a granite mountain. "The shadows belong in the past. This house, you, and Evan... this is my only reality now."

Later that evening, after dinner was finished and Evan was tucked safely in bed under his blue comforter, Damon stood by the rear sliding glass door leading to the backyard patio. Outside, the backyard sloped gently down toward a small, private pond framed by weeping willows. The moonlight danced across the surface of the water, highlighting the floating pads of wild lilies.

Damon held a steaming mug of black coffee in his left hand. His right hand rested casually inside his pocket, his thumb running over a small, cold steel object tucked deep near the seam—a brass key to a hidden wall safe located behind the floorboards in his basement workbench.

Inside that safe lay his past: two unregistered passports, a suppressed tactical firearm preserved in heavy gun oil, an encrypted satellite transponder that had been dark for nine years, and a silver medal of valor awarded in a private oval office ceremony with no press allowed.

He had promised Sarah the shadows wouldn't return. But as he looked out into the quiet night, his highly trained instincts whispered a warning. In small suburban towns, news traveled fast. A confrontation at a local martial arts gym—especially one involving Marcus, a fighter connected to downtown criminal enforcement crews—would not simply vanish into thin air.

Damon took a slow sip of his coffee, his expression entirely unreadable.

"Let them come," he thought quietly to himself, his pulse steady at fifty-two beats per minute. "If they seek the monster, they will only find a father protecting his home."
