Chapter 30 - The Shadow on the Horizon

Damon’s eyes widened a fraction. *The Director.* The architect of Task Force Chimera. The man who had orchestrated black sites across three continents—the man Damon believed had died in the Langley purges.

"He’s alive?" Damon’s voice dropped into a dangerous, icy whisper.

"He never died," Kowalski grinned, his eyes wild with fanatical certainty. "And now he knows his masterpiece is still breathing. This whole county is going to burn, Damon. Your wife, your boy, everyone you ever shook hands with... gone."

Kowalski moved his thumb to depress the detonator.

Damon didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.

A subsonic round punched cleanly through Kowalski’s forehead. The scarred veteran snapped backward, his limbs going rigid before collapsing like an empty marionette onto the concrete floor. The detonator slipped from his lifeless fingers, clattering harmlessly against the stone.

The silo fell utterly, deafeningly quiet.

Damon walked up to Kowalski’s corpse. He kicked the dead man’s pistol away, knelt down, and pulled a ruggedized military smartphone from the inner pocket of Kowalski’s trench coat.

The screen lit up instantly. A secure satellite feed was running in real-time.

On the screen was not a map of the grain silo. It was a live drone camera feed looking down from three thousand feet through the low clouds.

The crosshairs were centered on a small, isolated cabin beside a dark, mirror-smooth lake.

A silver Honda crossover was parked in the gravel driveway. Through the cabin’s lighted front window, the infrared silhouette of a woman and a young boy could be seen sitting at a small kitchen table.

Suddenly, the phone in Damon’s hand buzzed violently.

An incoming video call over an encrypted military bandwidth.

Damon pressed the green receiver icon and brought the phone to his ear, his heart hammering against his ribs with a fury he hadn't felt in seven years.

A voice spoke through the speaker—smooth, cultivated, chillingly polite.

*"Impressive work as always, Ghost-Six. You haven't lost your edge. But look at the screen. You have forty-five minutes before my strike team reaches Clearwater Lake. Let’s see if a plumber can outrun a cruise missile."*

The screen flashed red as a countdown timer initiated: **00:44:59**.

Outside the silo, the heavy thrum of twin rotor blades began to echo in the distance, descending through the low-hanging thunderclouds.
