Chapter 40 - The Leviathan Awakes

White, blinding phosphorus smoke filled the cabin in three seconds, turning the room into an opaque cloud of burning heat.

To the juggernaut’s thermal visor, the entire room became an undifferentiated wall of white noise. The armored killer hesitated, sweeping his shotgun back and forth, unable to isolate a thermal signature through the superheated smoke.

Damon did not need thermal optics.

He had memorized the layout of the room in the half-second before the grenade exploded. Moving through the dense smoke with absolute silence, he closed the distance from the blind side, sliding low beneath the sweeping barrel of the shotgun.

He did not strike the armor. He drove the point of his combat knife straight through the flexible joint beneath the juggernaut's armpit, piercing the brachial artery and severing the motor nerve.

The giant roared, dropping the weapon as his right arm went completely dead.

Damon seized the fallen shotgun with both hands, brought it up under the juggernaut's chin, and fired three consecutive slugs point-blank into the unarmored throat seal. The concussive force lifted the three-hundred-pound mercenary off his feet, dropping him motionless onto the metal deck.

Damon didn't pause to breathe.

**00:03:45.**

He kicked the emergency exit door open and stepped out onto the open crane deck into the driving rain.

Fifty feet above him, mounted on the apex of the towering iron crane, a high-frequency satellite dish was glowing with blue operational LEDs, aligning its azimuth toward the geostationary orbit over the Atlantic. The upload bar was visible on a digital telemetry screen mounted at the base of the mast: **84% COMPLETE**.

At the stern of the dredge, the twin outboards of Mercer’s armored escape boat roared to life, churning the black water into white foam as the boat began to pull away.

Damon had a single choice.

He had four rounds left in his rifle. If he climbed the crane to destroy the transmitter, Mercer would escape into the night, free to regroup and send more killers. If he pursued Mercer, the auction would complete, and his family’s lives would be forfeit within three minutes.

Damon took a deep, freezing breath of the lake air. He didn't look at Mercer’s boat.

He sprinted toward the base of the crane tower, grabbing the rusted iron ladder and ascending with furious speed. Bullets from Mercer’s departing boat began to strike the crane around him, snapping through the rungs like whips. Mercer was firing from the stern, trying to pin him down.

Damon reached the upper platform with forty seconds remaining on the clock.

**97% COMPLETE.**

The satellite dish was protected by a two-inch ballistic polycarbonate shield. Damon raised his suppressed carbine, pressed the muzzle directly against the center of the shield, and fired all four remaining rounds into the exact same point, fracturing the bulletproof glass into a spiderweb of white stress fractures.

He discarded the empty rifle.

With a roar that ripped from the deepest, most primal part of his chest, Damon swung his ten-inch forged steel plumber’s wrench with both hands, driving the heavy steel jaw through the cracked glass and straight into the dish's ceramic feed horn.

*CRACK.*

Sparks exploded across the wet deck. The blue lights turned violently red, then died.

Below him, the telemetry screen flickered: **UPLOAD FAILED. CONNECTION TERMINATED.**

Damon leaned against the iron railing, gasping for air as the rain poured over his face.

He looked down toward the water.

Mercer’s speedboat was already three hundred yards out, cutting across the center of the lake toward the eastern shoreline where a set of headlights was waiting on the access road. The director had escaped his grasp.

Then, through the darkness, Damon's eyes caught something moving on the water between Mercer's boat and the far shore.

It wasn't a police vessel.

It was a sleek, fifty-foot military interceptor craft, painted in midnight camouflage, slicing through the lake at fifty knots without running lights. It bore no government insignias—only a single, stylized silver emblem on the bow: a coiled viper with three stars.

The interceptor craft accelerated with terrifying violence, cutting directly across the bow of Mercer’s escape boat, forcing it to violently veer off course.

A high-powered spotlight from the interceptor suddenly snapped on, locking not onto Mercer, but sweeping up the height of the crane tower to hit Damon directly in the eyes.

Over the interceptor's high-gain external loudspeakers, an unfamiliar, heavily modulated female voice echoed across the open expanse of Clearwater Lake:

May you like

*"Ghost-Six. Step down from the tower. Director Mercer was not your target. He was your bait. Welcome to Phase Two."*

From the shadows of the lake, three more dark hulls emerged from the mist, encircling the crane, weapons systems arming with synchronized mechanical clicks that echoed across the water.
