Chapter 18 - THE UNEXPECTED VISIT

Late Tuesday afternoon, the sky turned a bruised shade of purple as autumn rain began to fall across the township.

Damon was inside his detached garage, the doors pulled wide open to let in the cool breeze. The garage was immaculately organized—tools hung in neat rows on pegboards, a workbench covered in clean oil rags sat against the back wall, and his faded Ford pickup sat on axle stands while he serviced the front brake pads.

The rhythmic ping of rain hitting the tin roof provided a soothing backdrop.

Suddenly, the faint crunch of gravel beneath tires alerted Damon.

He didn't look up immediately. He calmly set down his torque wrench on the workbench, picked up a blue shop rag, and began wiping the grease from his fingers. His internal threat clock began to count down: ten seconds to contact.

A sleek black sedan pulled to a stop at the edge of the driveway, its engine purring softly before shutting off.

The driver’s side door opened, and a tall man stepped out holding an umbrella. He wore a crisp dark trench coat over a business suit.

It was Master Vance.

Damon stood near the workbench, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes watching the older veteran walk across the rain-soaked driveway toward the garage opening.

Vance stopped just beneath the overhang of the garage roof, shaking the rain from his umbrella. He looked around the pristine shop, noting the order, the precision, and the quiet dignity of the space.

"Damon," Vance said softly, acknowledging him with a brief head tilt.

"Vance," Damon replied, his voice calm and polite. "You brought a lot of wet weather with you."

Vance smiled faintly, though his eyes remained serious. "I came to deliver something."

Vance reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, laminated card. He stepped forward and set it neatly on the corner of Damon's workbench.

Damon looked down at the card. It was a lifetime membership pass to Apex Martial Arts Academy, stamped with the headmaster's official gold seal. Across the front, written in neat calligraphy, was Evan’s name.

"What's this?" Damon asked quietly.

"A formal invitation," Vance said. "Your boy has heart, Damon. And after what happened Friday night... I think he deserves a safe place to train. Free of charge. No disruptions. No loud mouths."
