Chapter 49 - Blood and Ink

The transition of the Blackwood empire was not without friction. But the vacuum left by the federal arrests of the Five Families allowed Dante to systematically liquidate his illegal ports and laundering operations without plunging the city into an underworld war.

Sitting in the private, newly renovated office above Bellanote, Dante reviewed the final legal manifests. Julian’s betrayal had inadvertently provided the perfect smokescreen. The world believed the criminal element of the Blackwood family had died with Julian in the Brooklyn shipyard.

Marcus knocked on the office door, stepping in with a thick leather portfolio.

"The final offshore accounts have been routed through the Swiss trusts and scrubbed into the new real estate holding firm, Dante," Marcus reported. "We are one hundred percent legitimate. The FBI task force officially closed the file on the Marcone and Cavallo syndicates this morning."

Dante signed the final page with a heavy fountain pen. "Good. Disband the tactical strike teams. Offer the men severance or positions in the corporate security branch."

"It's a new world, Boss," Marcus smiled slightly.

"It is," Dante agreed, looking out the window down onto Mulberry Street.

Below, he could see Maya and Sofia walking hand-in-hand toward a local art supply store, their laughter carrying faintly through the double-paned glass. Dante felt a profound peace settle over his spirit. The blood on his hands would never truly wash away, but he had spent it buying a future where his daughter would never have to draw in the dark again.
