Chapter 28 - The Wolves at the Gates

The heavy steel vault door did not open slowly.
It detonated.
A shaped linear breaching charge exploded around the heavy iron hinges with an ear-splitting, concussive roar. The massive six-inch-thick steel door was blown inward off its mounts, flying across the concrete floor like a multi-ton battering ram, crushing one of Marcone’s guards beneath its sheer mass in a spray of blood and bent steel.
Before the smoke could even begin to clear, flashbang canisters bounced into the vault, detonating in a series of blinding, magnesium-white explosions and deafening 170-decibel blasts.
Marcone’s men screamed, firing blindly into the thick white smoke. Streams of lead ripped through the air, ricocheting wildly off the steel ceiling and insulated walls.
Through the fog of war, Dante Blackwood came like an avenging demon.
He moved with terrifying, mechanical precision. Emerging from the left flank, his rifle barked twice in rapid succession. The first shooter took two rounds to the chest and collapsed instantly. Dante pivoted smoothly, ignoring the shrapnel wound tearing at his shoulder, and fired three rounds through the wooden crates where a second gunman was reloading, dropping him instantly.
Marcus and three tactical operatives entered through the smoke, sweeping the corners, clearing the perimeter with ruthless, disciplined lethality. Within ten seconds, the gunfire stopped.
The vault was filled with the acrid stench of cordite, the haze of white smoke, and the groans of dying men.
"Hold!" Dante roared, his voice cutting through the ringing silence like a whip.
The smoke began to drift upward into the exhaust vents, revealing the far corner of the vault.
Salvatore Marcone was crouched against the back wall, his face red with panic, his expensive suit spattered with the blood of his dead men. He had Maya pinned in front of him, his left arm locked tightly around her neck, cutting off her airway, while his right hand pressed the chrome revolver viciously against the soft skin beneath her ear.
"Drop your weapons!" Marcone screamed, his voice cracking hysterically. Saliva flew from his lips. "Drop them, Blackwood, or I swear to God I'll blow her head off! I'll paint this wall with her!"
Dante lowered his rifle slowly, his eyes locking onto Maya.
Her face was bruised, her lip split, her clothes torn and filthy. Blood dripped steadily from her shredded wrists onto the floor. But her brown eyes were wide, alert, and fiercely alive.
When she saw Dante standing there—alive, his eyes burning with an ancient, protective fire—a ragged gasp tore from her throat.
"Dante..." she whispered.
"I have you, Maya," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register of utter calm that was far more terrifying than any scream. He took half a step forward.
"Stay back!" Marcone shrieked, tightening his grip on Maya's neck until she choked for air. "One more step and she dies! You think you won, Dante?! You think you're a king?! You couldn't save your wife, and you won't save this little gutter rat either!"
Dante didn't stop. He stood tall in the center of the vault, letting his rifle hang loosely by its sling.
"Let her go, Salvatore," Dante said quietly. "And I promise you will die quickly."
"Fuck you!" Marcone screamed, cocking the hammer of the revolver back with a heavy, metallic *click*. "I want a chopper on the roof! I want safe passage out of the state, or I pull this trigger right now!"
Maya looked down at Dante’s hand.
Beneath the hem of his black tactical coat, Dante’s right index finger gave a single, microscopic twitch—a downward flick toward the floor.
Maya understood.

She didn't hesitate.
